Default LCD vs LED

Can anyone tell me the difference between the LCD and LED TV's? Is LED a new technology? I have an LCD and my son is looking and asked about LED so any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

"the movie and booty sweat's the same thing baby"

ok here's the lo-down

LED tv's ARE an LCD tv, they just have a different method of backlighting. Traditional LCD's use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs) as their method of backlighting the screen whereas the LED LCD's use Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to light the screen. There are two main ways to use LED's to light an LCD screen. There are edge lit LED LCD tv's (like the ones you see in the Samsung commercials on TV) and then there backlit LED LCD tv's (like the Sony XBR8). The edge lit displays have the advantage of being very thin (1.2 inches) and cost less whereas the backlit LED LCD tv's have better black levels thanks to local dimming. So to sum things up, LED tv's ARE LCD tv's...they just use a different method of lighting the screen. Hope this helps

Consumer confusion like this is the reason that the British have required LCD tv manufacturers with LED backlights to call them LED Backlight LCD TVs, rather than LED TVs which they deemed was willfully misleading.

Quote:
ASA, UK's advertising watchdog, ruled last week that Samsung must stop calling its LED TV range, LED as they are not powered by Light Emitting Diodes per se.

Five people complained about this and the ASA upheld the complaints, saying that Samsung had breached rules in "misleading advertising and truthfulness in advertising".

Samsung actually uses LED Backlit LCD Television and has been told by the Advertising Standards Authority to rewrite its UK advertisements and modify its UK campaign or face the consequences.

Yup, it's unfortunate that TV companies have almost turned LEDs into a marketing gimmick by not calling them LED LCDs. Everyone I talk to doesn't realize they're the same technology.
