Default LED or LCD

I am looking to get a new TV to upgrade the one I have had for a few years now. I currently have a Sony 50 LCD3 and have been happy with but it is starting to show its age. I have 1 pixel that has burnt out and it is bugging the crap outta me and I guess because it is 1080i you can actually see the bars from refresh running up and down the screen. Granted it is like alternating lines of a shade darker but it bugs me. So I really like the Sony SXRD's and have been looking at the Samsung LED. What are your opinions on both? Which is better for me? I watch a lot of movies ranging from Sci Fi and Horror to well just about anything. I also do a lot of gaming with a 360, PS3, PS2, Xbox, and a gamecube all hooked up and frequantly used. Which would be the better for me. I am extremely picky with my picture quality. I already am used to an SXRD cause my dad has the 60" a 360 looks great on it as well as movies off a BDP-S1.

Thanks

I take it you are talking rear projection (RP) SXRDs. Unfortuntately, Sony no longer makes them. Sony is no longer involved with RPTVs at all. The SXRDs were some great TVs, most notably the XBR1. One of the finest pictures I have ever seen.

Both Sony and Samsung offer LED backlit LCD TVs, but the ultra-great XBR8 from Sony was also ultra-expensive - several thousand dollars still (at least down from $7,000 when the 55"). Samsung offers several models in the 40" and higher sizes, ranging in price from about $2,200 to $4,000. I have seen the XBR8 and a few of the Samsungs. The PQ is quite nice on them. "Local dimming" LED technology provides impressive black levels on their pictures.

Don't count plasma out, either. I'm sure someone will extoll the picture-advantages of plasma TVs, and I would have to agree on most them.

Good luck!

Yeah we also have a SXRD rear projection. So yes that is what I was refering too. I mean as far as Computer Monitors LED monitors seem to be superior over LCD. So I was wondering if the same was true for TV's. As far as plasmas go, well I just don't like em. Seen too many of go bad really quickly. I have had my tv for like 4 years now and I have enjoyed it but I think it is just dying or I may need to replace the bulb assembly. If I get something else I am look at the 50-60 inch range about the $2000-$3000 range. So what would you recommend for my usage?

Ok with that said, what advantage will it offer over a regular LCD? I don't mind have a really deep tv as opposed to one that is an inch deep. Does it offer anything over the other?

For the cost, I don't see the point in buying a LED. You can get a better plasma for a lot less.

The advantages; deeper blacks, more eco friendly, brighter picture. Since LED HDTV's are newer, though, they can cost a pretty penny. I'd say stay away from the edge lit LED's because they can cause "flashlighting" problems on your screen. Go with a local dimming LED if you go that route.

I own both the localized dimming LED 55" Samsung 950 series and the new edge lit LED 6000 series. I'm very impressed with the black levels on either set but the 950 series is best I've ever seen on any TV when calibrated properly. Sony makes very nice LED LCD sets as well but it really comes down to personal preference and what you can afford in the end.
