Default New install - questions

Hi Guys,

I am going to be installing some speakers for my brother in a few weeks and have a few questions - if you look at the layout in the drawing..

he will have a Monitor Audio R250HD left and right of his tv screen (46" Bravia LCD) and the centre R250HD mounted in the corner directly behind the tv

specs for r250
http://www.monitoraudio.co.uk/produc.../specification

He's going to use R180HD's for left/right surround. He wont be adding a sub for the moment and it will be run by a Denon AVR 1909

specs for r180
http://www.monitoraudio.co.uk/produc.../specification

Blu-Ray provided by Sony S350

The questions I have are around speaker placement

Is the proposed positioning of the centre speaker ok? All the speakers are forward ported so there shouldnt be an issue with attaching to the wall but is there any issue with the tv blocking the should from the centre speaker coming through - or the fact that its back further than the left/right speakers?

Will the absence of a sub be very noticeable? The 250s should be fairly good on their own so i'm hoping it wont be a huge gap. Also i need to join some speaker wire - his electrician left speaker cabes at ceiling height where the surrounds are going - so i will need to run something down the wall for the surrounds. I'm looking at QED micro cable for wiring everything up - is it ok?

Any tips on joining the speaker wires?

Cheers,
Mick

its my opinion that you should have the center channel out front and not blocked by anything. So I would say pull the speaker out to the front of the of the TV. Also, are the couches against the wall or is there a little space behind them. Personally I would put the surrounds behind the couches or add a 6th & 7th speaker to the mix due to how far apart the speakers appear they will be. lastly, I would pull the front speakers out from the corner 1-2 feet from the wall, and keep them 6-8 feet apart. It would be great if you could get bi-poles and put those behind the couches instead, but the Radius HD series doesn't have bi-poles.

hi - thanks for the reply - its my brothers setup and he's very picky about where stuff is.. so i'm lukcy to be able to get surrounds in at all... no way would he let me put the centre out front.... i could maybe add another speaker which would be on the corner opposite the tv.. as a rear.. but then i'm not sure if he'd be on for that either..

Cheers,
mick

I assume there is no way around the diagonal set-up. If there is a choice, I would recommend a straight left to right or top to bottom set-up (looking at drawing). The biggest problem I see is the center speaker. If the TV or TV stand is in front of the center speaker (I assume from the drawing, there will be a full obstruction to the center speaker), all the dialog and about 80% of the sound will be blocked. Although IMHO, it sounds like your brother does not really care either way, based on your comments. Finally, if you want to do it right, you will need a subwoofer - IMO it is one of the most important factors in any HT and a lack of a subwoofer is obvious. Good luck.

I understand, but I would show him Vega2K's comment and explain what it means to him.

there wont be any convincing him otherwise i'm afraid.. i might try and get him to put the centre speaker horizontal in front of the tv.. but his stand is eliptical in shape.. so there may not be enough space for the speaker to sit.. yeah i dont know why i'm fussing over it really.. he would probably have been happy with a all in one jobby that wouldnt even do lossless audio...

still though i cant help it!

Maybe you can make a deal with him. Promise him, that if he let's you set it up properly (don't know about the the sub though, maybe you can borrow one from best buy and then return it ) for a week and he does not like it, you will put everything back the way it was. I think playing the right blu-rays he will see the light.

I am using a similar set up but my center is right in front of the TV, my left surround is exact opposite to the right.

Also notice that you didn't include a sub in your diagram..
