Default HDCP compliance and cable...

I've started to receive the following error message when the system is turned on:

Copy Protection
The YPrPb output is blocked
Press EXIT to Cancel

My cable carrier is Cablevision and the box is connected via HDMI directly to my Sony KDL46Z5100. In addition my old Sharp LCD, also connected via HDMI, started to receive the same error message when it's fired up. In both cases, pressing exit seems to resolve the problem and it doesn't return when the channel is changed. The YPrPb is actually for component connection as I understand, then how is it relevant to HDMI connection?

While I understand that my system could be suspect, I also have some doubts that it is. The Sharp LCD is about 4-5 years old and it never once had this error message until yesterday.

I will call Cablevision and was wondering if anyone else had similar issues with their cable carrier.
TIA...

It's definitely your cable box. I'm just taking a stab here, but I'm guessing you have a Motorola. Am I right?

It looks like your Cable box is giving that error message. In addition to HDMI, are using any other cable (e.g. RGB) for other connections. It is just complaining that HD is blocked due to copy protection on component (which is the normal practice). Since you have HDMI connected, it should be okay (other than the annoying error message).

Sorry, it's actually a Scientific Atlanta 4250HD box...

There are no other video cable connected to either of the cable boxes; one does have optical audio connected to the A/V receiver, but that shouldn't cause the error. You are correct that that the "annoying" message does go away via the exit button; I am just worried that it gets worse as time goes by.

I did call the cable company and they suggested:
  1. exchange the cable box
  2. replace the HDMI cable
Both solutions are hogwash AFAICS since the error message cannot be reproduced in a consistent manner. It seems to me that the HDPC control in itself has its own "bugs" that occasionally flags the system "non-compliant". As such, the cable box does what it suppose to and blocks HD output.

This may even be due to the TV being started up and going through its "bootup cycle", during which time the cable box cannot "talk" to the TV through the control channel of the HDMI connection. Once the TV is "up and running", the HD content is allowed. The fact that I've only seen the error message during start up seems to support this suggestion.
Oh well, time will be the judge, if this is just another minor annoyance of the HD world...

I don't think a new HDMI cable would fix this issue. If the cable company replaces the box free of charge go for it. Otherwise, it is likely that you need to get used to it. It is minor annoyance and will not impact the quality of the picture.
