Question help me pick a wireless router

i am going to future shop/best buy today to purchase a wireless router

i have narrowed my choices down to the following:

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0093527&catid=

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0127686&catid=

i will be using this router primarily for my ps3 (both browsing and playing online), wi-fi with my first gen ipod touch, and for any future laptops for internet browsing/downloading

which is the best of the two?

thanks!

They both seem pretty similar.

I currently have a lower model D-link that works just fine.

The Linksys does look a lot sleeker tho.

In the end, the PS3 is only wireless G, not N anyways, so I think either will get you around the same speed

thanks...i also want it for future use with wireless N devices (i.e. future laptops)

would you say both could do the trick nicely (or equally)?

does anyone know the general differences between linksys and d-link? (i.e is one easier to setup, is one more security-featured etc)

I'm currently running the DIR-825 and have had no problems with it whatsoever! It did cost me a little bit more than both of those other routers, but it has all the bells and whistles.

Have you considered the DIR-655?

Go with the D-Link. I had a similar Linksys model from within that family (WRT-610N) and the item never worked out of the box. The router would keep dropping a connection numerous times a day. They finally released an updated firmware over 6 months after the router was released in Jan 09. All models within this family had the same problem. By that time I had already moved on the D-Link and haven't had a problem with the new router. I can't say whether the new firmware fixed anything with the Linksys router but they haven't released a firmware since.

I think either one would work for your needs. The D-link is cheaper.

Check C-net or amazon.com reviews on each one and see what they/others say.

Either way, download the latest fireware.

I have this one by TRENDnet and it has never failed me. I bought if for $24.99 at Fry's Electronics and it is a great product. They provide 24/7 tech support and they provde a three year guaranteed warranty on there products. Good luck.

I dont know if this applies to these routers but I suggest holding off getting a wireless n router for now. its not even finalized yet as these are pre-N routers. While there may be firmware updates to update the routers, some or most even are inconsistent especially when it comes to performance. Mixed modes when using g and n on these pre-n routers reduces performance. Using an N router won't give youf aster performance than a g router on g-enabled devices. To take advantage of the speed, you will need equipment capable of wireless n. Do not be fooled by dual band either. Unless it states simultaneous streaming, those routers can't do both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz at the same time, only one or the other. I know there are some true dual band routers but becareful as some are falsey advertised. I was searching for a router last year and based on reviews, this is what I came up with.

On a side note, either one company is good, just make sure you do your research and buy one that is reliable. just because one is lower price, doesnt mean its good.

ya i just read your post now but i was halfway to best buy ready to do a price match to get a N router for $50 flat (w/tax) but i elected against it.

i decided to wait until the N routers are finalized since i am in no extreme rush.

I've never had a problem with wireless-N and it has been in the making for years. However, you can read mores about Wi-Fi Alliances' plans for wireless-n via this link:

I went the D-Link wireless N router route and it was a great choice. Plug and play no configuring needed...thats not to say you couldn't customise it and lock it down from intruders etc if you want to but I was good to go right from the box and the range is great. I even have a switch hooked up to it due to number of devices wired handles the excess traffic great. 10 items all on one little router with a switch. 5 wired 5 wireless 2 of the wireless are N devices, and have had flawless performance.

EDIT: I had to do a little bit to get wireless working but that is expected I guess.
