Default ps3 slim. Worth it?

I already have a ps3 60gig and I'm debating getting the slim, just to take advantage of the bitstreaming dts hd and true hd. Now my question is, will my amplifier do such a better job at decoding the audio than my ps3? or is there not much of a difference? what do you guys think?

Uh oh...something tells me this isn't going to end well

And yes I do think the slim is worth it.

Bitstreaming makes a HUGE difference! Now that my receiver says "DTS HD MA" instead of "MULTI CH IN" it sounds WAY better. Twice as good as before!

Some people can't tell the difference, but many people believe that the receiver does a better job. Audioholics did a review of the Oppo BD player with bitstream vs PCM, and they said that even with the good DAC (Digital to Analog Converters) that the bitstream still sounded better.

Link to Oppo Review

Read the very last paragraph, and it also says it somewhere in the middle of the review

I just got mine hooked up and at first the bitstream settting was not sending any sound then I switched back to pcm then back to bitstream and it started working and the receiver showing the dolby true hd (kung fu panda). I couldn't really tell which was better but the slim does look much better in my rack and It also now turns off when I turn off my sony bravia tv. I recommend a buy on the slim.

I'm thinking of getting one just because I hear they're really quiet. I have one of the 80 GB models that was known for being really loud. I love it other than that. What do you guys think?

I probably would not have paid $300 just for a quieter PS3, but since I sold my other one for $250 (the original 20GB model) the difference was well worth it to me. It is so much quieter. And I really do think the Slim looks good in person. I also like having the lossless codecs light up on my receiver. So, if you can sell your 80GB and buy it I would say it's worth it. Or, if you have the money, buy another!

There are also other benefits: smaller, lighter, less power consumption, Bravia Sync (if you have Sony TV), etc.
I heard about an EBGames promotion where if you take in a fat PS3 + 2 games + $49 they'll give you a PS3 Slim. I *might* do that with my 60GB model (except that I've taken it apart a few times to fix it before...)

You got yours for $50, I would totally jump on that deal if I could!

I'll make it simple for you. I too own a 60gb. I picked up a slim last night and compared bitstream vs PCM. Here are the results:

EQUAL. There is NO difference. Keep the 60gb and get slim if you want a second PS3. No need though to get rid of 60gb just for the slim.

OK here's gonna be aq first then. What do you set the PS3 and the receiver to so that the receiver decodes the audio and nott he ps3. I know the Ps3 has to be set to bitstream thats about all I know.

The only benefit I see is it uses less power.

Bitstream; does not sound better.
Lighter; do you carry it often?
Smaller; did you have a space problem?
The newer "Fats" are quiet
And unless you are new to Blu-ray and you need a player that is also a great gaming system, then get one by all means. But if you think replacing your older PS3 is the way to go, I am going to have to disagree.

That is all U need to do. THe receiver will decode the data when it receives them (no need to set anything for decoding).
For pure sound, just cancel any Processing mode on Ur receiver such as Pro Logic, THX, Cinema,....

My 80G is as loud as an airplane taking off. If I had the money, I would buy another one. Sad part is that I bought for $600.

Not this quiet, at least from what I can tell after 1 day of ownership.

I gotta agree. I have 3 other PS3's (40,60,80) and I also got a new Slim for the bitstreaming. I now hear stuff I never heard before. I also think the picture quality might be a little better. More depth and range, but that might be wishful thinking
Recomended!
