Lightbulb Will the Sony PS3 @ $299 Finally Corner the Market on Best Value Blu-ray Player?!?!

The Sony PS3 has been the best "value-added" Blu-ray player since it's release, but @ $299 do you think it will finally corner the market as the BEST value in a Blu-ray player to date?

IMHO I think Sony just unleashed a juggernaut with this announcement, and will end up driving the domination of Blu-ray over DVD more quickly that originally believed. My $0.02 for sure

Best value for a gamer - yes, best value for a audio/videophile - no, that title belongs to the OPPO 83, (hoping to get one real soon, like for a late birthday present)!!! Read HT Magazines review of the Oppo, don't get me wrong - the PS3 is a great machine, but the Oppo is destroying everything out there, the only thing it doesn't do is play games, but it does everything else in spades (to include SACD and DVD-A)!!!!

For someone who doesn't find a need for the gaming functionality of the PS3, no its not the best value. There are plenty of other dedicated blu-ray players that can be had for significantly cheaper.

Honestly, after my old PS2's dvd functionality died I wouldn't trust the PS3 as a blu-ray player.

As for the oppo, its an amazing player. But, best value? No way.

Not likely. It still lacks IR support and the ability to bitstream lossless audio. It's also still more expensive than comparable standalone players. Aside from gamers... not many people want to pay more money for a BD player with fewer BD related featutes.

Plus, I think the BD player prices are dropping quickly.
It seems to be always at half the price of PS3's cost, so if you don't play the games, it's a waste. I personally don't want the fan noise, 10x more power to play a disc.

There seems to be people who thinks PS3 has the best picture quality due to a glob of processing power.. but I don't agree. They also don't like bitstream because you can't hear the menu beeps. Give me a break!
It does load a disc a bit faster.

Actually I think the whole premise of this thread is flawed. There was a time when the PS3 was indeed the best value player on that market... but that time has passed and is not likely to come back.

It would be the best value player if we were talking about a few years ago, when retail price for standalones was significantly higher than what it is today. PoorSignal and InLimbo87 already pointed this out.

I'd say it is probably the best value video game system, though. If XBOX could play Blu-ray, then one might have an argument, but it can't so you don't. The Wii is far less expensive, but obviously does far fewer things, too (as far as multimedia flexibility).

Although this will obviously help BD sales, its only the best value player for a certain group of people (gamers that don't already have a PS3) This along with lower prices on standalone players will definitely give Blu-ray a significant push in the right direction during the upcoming holiday shopping season. Especially with all the homes with new HDTV's in them since the whole switch to digital thing went into effect.

Well I have to disagree with the majority here, i think it is the best value BD player because;

£250 RRP
=
BD Live
Plays & Stores MP4 + AVI files
Can store your entire music collection
Can store your entire photo collection
PSN Video store
Web browser
iPlayer built in (coming soon in the UK)

I still think no other BD players offer these types of extras yet.

Lets try to clear up one myth about PS3's right now that over half of the people with PS3 seems to think holds true. If you have a PS3 60G or older model... yes you have fan noise.. if you have any model in the last 2 years or so, there is no fan noise.. Try to understand that the 60g you cherish so badly is the only one with fan noise and everyone else in the world with a PS3 enjoys no fan noise.. Sick of seeing messages trying to claim existing PS3's have fan noise or are loud.. it hasn't been true for years now.

As far as the topic.. it depends on what people want.. I personally will not get a BR player that doesn't allow you to stream video, music, pictures to it through a Media Center. I will admit I have no idea about the OPPU or others but if they can't do this that would be a deal breaker for sure. It is also nice to be able to store all my music and personal digital pictures/home video on the hard drive of the PS3 for family gatherings to view on the big TV. Games and downloading demos of games for my kids is just icing on the cake for the PS3 as a blu ray player, which is its main function in my house.

Best value in terms of gaming console... Definately not the best value as a BD player...

I have a PC that does all of that - including playing BD and Bitstreaming. However I would like to have an OPPO for for it's SACD/DVD-A and other abilities. The Oppo is an audio/videophile value - the PS3 a gaming value and my PC (since i've owned it for years and just upgraded whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted - just a plain value). All of them have their place as BD becomes the major media standard.

I will have to check out this Oppo 83. My PS3 will do for now since I don't have a supreme audio system, but once I do I will have to kick the Playstation to the curb (at least when playing Blus)

In terms of all the extra features it has over SA's yes, but some people don't care, or want all that stuff. its up to you to decide if its the best value.

As for bitstreaming, it now has the right chip, but for some reason it seems sony didn't activate the feature. maby in a future firmware update.

If anything, the New PS3 and price drop have caused my value of my PS3s to drop...... not happy....

I plan on selling them both to fund an OPPO.

Don't you mean go up? they wont be making those models anymore. especially if you have the ones that play PS2 games, SACD, have 4 USB ports, and the media card slots.

I think the PS3 Slim is the best value media center with BD capability, but it's not the best value strictly among BD players. There are standalones that provide overall BD playback performance comparable to the PS3 at much less than $299.

Like this +1

I generally tell people--those who have not yet made the jump to HD--that an HDTV and a PS3 go hand in hand if/when they take the plunge. There's little point in getting a Blu-ray/HD-media center thingy without HDTV, and if someone is looking at getting HDTV, they'd be well served in getting a PS3 to really take advantage of everything their new display will be able to do.
