in my eyes the ps3 has always been a blu-ray player because it can play blu-ray movies and blu-ray video games aka PS3 games.

Funny...because Sony's keynote at TGS was completely undermining the PS3 as anything other than a games first console.

If this is true, then Sony is dropping the big one. Bye Bye Toshiba, MS, and hd-dud.

All those people who already have a PS3 will realize they don't need to buy any hardware, just movies.

This is great news! More promotion and awareness of the Blu-Ray format! This will increase the demand for Blu-Ray movies

I hope this also means they will soon release a firmware upgrade for the PS3 to make it profile 1.1 and to have it fully decode DTS-MA and bitstream DTS-MA.

Default i see...

As much as I am loving blu-ray. I was always foremost a gamer, so in all honestly I'd rather see more focus on gaming but hey it might just bring us new gamers as well. I believe a packaging with Spiderman 3 is in the near future.

what gamers dont always see is selling PS3 to nongamers helps them also
see most PS3 gamers are "hard core" they want the best games in every way
BUT the one thing that been holding the game makers from doing them is the
PS3 low system numbers
the sooner PS3 hits the magic 10mill sold you will see more kicking games now game makers just see PS3 as 1/2 the the numbers the othere guys have
the funny thing is going by the number of game sold PS3 gamers buy more games then Xbox gamers and almost3 times that of the Wii per system
this is baced on sales of this years games not counting xbox game that were sold last year as that whoud give xbox the win with almost 2 time the ps3 games

I doubt if they'll do internal decoding, because that would require royalties to be paid to DTS for every PS3 system. They'll do pass-through before the end of the year, I'll bet.

I take this announcement by Sony as a definite focus on Profile 1.1 and 2.0 compatibility. We may not have to wait much longer folks...

Then let those that want it, pay for it. That's what the Playstation store is for: buying stuff.

I have no problem buying add-ins for Blu-ray, etc.

I was told by another member on this forum that the current PS3 will never be able to bitstream TrueHD because the HDMI port does not plug directly into the main processor, but another chip. So there will never be a firmware upgrade capable of bitstreaming TrueHD since the firmware only applies to the main processor. I would assume that this would be the same situation for DTS-MA. Do you know anything different from what the member told me? Like you, I would really like to it bitstream these codecs, but what the member told me shot that out of the water.

I totally agree, I would pay for something like this...I would spend up to $20 for DTS-MA decoding it there was no way Sony could get a FW revision to enable bitstream out for it.

I don't see it happening. But, I've been wrong before. Twice, as a matter of fact. I was only 6 years old the last time I was wrong, so I still stand by "I don't see it happening."

Sorry.

Kidding aside, I think the market for the internal decoder on the PSN Shop would be very small if they're already going to give us bitstream pass-through for free. I think most gamers who would see it listed on the PSN Shop would probably ask, "what the hell is that?"

Internal decoding would be great for those folks out there that DO NOT have an HT receiver that can decode DTS-HD MA since they wouldn't have to upgrade their receiver, but I still don't see Sony going that route. At least in the near future. Once the PSN gets some real depth and breadth, it may be viable to offer features like this.
