Default For those with a new PS3 Slim

How do DVDs look/sound? I read a review that blasted the player in the DVD category, basically calling it awful. I still have quite a DVD collection and have been thinking of replacing my BDP-S350 with a PS3 Slim, but I want to hear about the audio/video presentation on the Slim from people who own it.

Thanks!

I'm very interested in this as well since they were comparing some numbers on it with the old PS3's. Surely Dvd playback quality didn't get worse did it!!???

FWIW I have a BDP-S350 and a O.G. 60gb. IMO the 350 blows the ps3 away in upscaling, it's not even close. The one thing the ps3 does over the stand alone is load times for BD's. I got the stand alone to help keep the milage down on my ps3. Just my opinion but if you are looking to get some games then by all means add a ps3 but if you are just looking for movie play back keep what ya got. The whole if it ain't broke don't fix it type of thing.

Well, I'm not a huge gamer but there are games I'm interested in, so it's a definite plus that the PS3 does gaming. I'm mostly into the PS3 Slim because it decodes HD audio. My BDP-S350 doesn't. But if the PS3 Slim sucks are upscaling, then it's a no-sale. I've got way too many DVDs I still watch, and I want them to look as good as possible. I'd forgo the games in order to have better upscaling.

If not the PS3 Slim, I'm thinking a BDP-S560, or even save a bit more for an Oppo.

I thought the PS3 Slim bitstream the audio codecs just like the S350 to the AVR and let it decodes the appropriate signal.

My receiver can't decode newer HD codecs, but can accept Linear PCM over HDMI. So, decoded HD signals from the player would be the way for me to go at the moment.

I've read it, but it still doesn't answer my question. I'm not technically savvy enough to understand the lingo like "audio jitter of 461.7ps" and the such. So, I'm asking people who do have the Slim to tell me what they think.

All PS3s can decode the HD audio and send it as LPCM over HDMI. The difference is, the slim can also bitstream.

Sony has some cheap recievers that do the decoding if your looking to upgrade. Would be about the same cost as the PS3 though. Just a thought get a slim and use it for BD play back and gaming and use the 350 for dvd upscaling there is no HD audio on sdvd anyway. Then down the road when you decide to upgrade your receiver to one that decodes DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD and move the PS3 to the bedroom.
It's not that the PS3 is bad at upscaling I just think the 350 does it better. There is the possibility that I don't have the scaling settings on my PS3 set right.
