Default Dark Blue - a dark day for Blu ray

I really enjoyed this Kurt Russell flic, BUT, to my disappointment the film's "commentary" is not provided on the Blu ray disk, where you would naturally want to watch the film and listen to it. Instead, the studio has provided a standard def DVD for all the film's extra features, and THAT is where the commentary is located.

So basically you have to watch it in standard def if you want to listen to the commentary.

I have no big problem with the studios using a DVD for standard def extra feature material, but this is CHEAP. I was going to buy this but the studio has lost the sale.

Child's Play has the extras on both the BD and the DVD. The ones listed are combo packs where the BD is just the movie while the DVD includes the movie and extras.

Do you mean that these titles have the same "commentary" issue, or that they have simply put the standard def extras on a DVD?

There are no extras whatsoever on the BDs for those titles I listed.

Commentaries and all remaining extras are on the DVDs included in the package. Note that Navy Seals does not have a commentary but the DVD has the trailer.

Thanks. I didn't realise this. It is only the commentary factor that I find unnacceptable. Surely there would be very little effort required to include it on the actual BD....

Thumbs down

If they can't be bothered to put any of the video-based special features on the BD, at the very least, they need to include the commentary track. How else are we supposed to listen to a commentary while watching in hi-def?

Oh yeah, I know! We need to pump the commentary on the DVD through a DVD player hooked up to a stereo while playing the hi-def movie on mute.

I'll say it again: MGM sucks when it comes to non-Bond catalog titles!

Those people can stick to DVD. And these titles can be found for under $15, which isn't much more than a DVD.

lol, melodramatic much?

I know some people love extras but I bet if you started up a separate poll and asked how many people actually watch special features on blu-ray you'd receive an overwhelming response that most do not most of the time.

For many of us, the premium picture and sound is why we got into blu-ray, not the extra capacity for extras. I understand being frustrated but you still HAVE the extras, so what's the big deal?

i watch every movie that includes a commentary track with the commentary at least once. other extras i dont really care about but if the commentary isnt on blu ray disc that would infuriate me. luckily i dont own any of these mgm titles

just for confirmation because i plan on picking it up, the commentary is included on the blu disc for Child's Play correct?

Those titles where authored during MGM's Blu-ray hiatus back in 2007. Back then most of their releases were encoded in MPEG-2 on BD-25 discs with no special features.

Now instead of re-encoding them they are releasing the same discs to market they sat on this whole time. But to make it seem slightly worthy they are just sticking the DVD version in the case with the Blu-ray.

That is just wrong. I bet with the Hannibal box set we get screwed. I only want Hannibal and to get it I have to buy the box set. I guess I will wait. Silence of the Lambs you can purchase on its own, but Manhunter and Hannibal you get screwed. This really messes up those that bought Silence of the Lambs already. I am a huge Ridley Scott fan and in my opinion Hannibal is the best movie of the whole Hannibal series. I prefer Julian Moore over Jodie Foster. Plus you have Gary Oldman that does a great performance. You also get enough info you don't even have to watch any of the other movies to know what is going on.

That doesn't explain why Misery was given the movie-only BD with special edition DVD combo package treatment. Misery is AVC encoded and on a 50GB Blu-ray Disc and the same goes for Child's Play.

Child's Play even gets a healthier video bit-rate than Misery.

talk about being melodramatic, cmon thats pretty stupid not to buy a movie because of no commentary.
if i had a choice of buying a bluray without any special features (for less money) vs ones with 2-3 discs of extra features(more money) i will tke the one with less.
for me i wish companies would make movies with out the features for those people who dont care.
