Default just watched 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time

I just watched 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time and......................... I loved it. Being that I'm young, I don't always identify with movies from older generations, yet there are a lot of older films I love. But I truly didn't know how I was gonna feel about this film, being that it's a Kubrick film and I've heard a lot of negative things over the years. But man, I really liked this movie! I didn't even know how I felt about it half way through, or even almost towards the end. But once it ended, I kinda flash backed the entire movie and I just started to love it.

Even as the minutes pass since I've just finished it, it keeps growing on me. Now I can't wait to see this again, but I don't want to ruin it for me (I can't watch a movie too many times in a row or it kinda ruins it for me). I wish I could've seen that movie in the theaters back in the day, that would've been a cool experience. I'm gonna wait a while to watch it for the second time, maybe wait for a rainy winter day, but I can't wait to see this again. I'm throwin this in with my next Amazon order, can't beat $9.50 for a masterpiece.

Anyways, just felt like sharing! How did you like the movie your first time seeing it? And did it take multiple viewings to like it? Or do you like it at all?

I didn't know what the hell was going on when I watched the film at around 9-10 years old, but the second time was the charm and the movies majestic and optimistic vision of humanity is always startling. I don't watch it very often because I know the film so well and frankly, it's not the kind of film I could watch very often. It requires a lot of the viewer, but each time I view it I always find new things to love. I may go so far as to call it the definitive film. It encompasses so much about humanity and our place in the universe that 40+ years later, it's still mind-blowing, to the point where whenever I look up at the starry night sky, I always think of the film.

First time I watched this movie was for a class my junior year of college. Was absolutely blown away, and I normally don't watch much sci-fi. To keep an audience captivated without dialogue for the first 40 some minutes of the movie, Kubrick deserves all of the credit in the world.

It was quite a great film and I was happy to get it for $10 at Amazon. It is one of those films you have to see to appreciate.

First time I really watched and enjoyed the movie was second year of college. We went in depth with it and discussed all parts of it. It really opened my eyes. I had seen it numerous times over the years (and always enjoyed it) but didn't develop a true appreciation until that class though.

I saw it when I was 10. It was in a one-screen theatre that was as wide as any Imax screen today. I was completely captivated by the movie and still am to this day.

Thank heavens for Blu-ray and the opportunity to see it again in its true beauty.

There is something majestic about this film. Seeing it for the first time at around 14, I came away feeling insignificant. Something gelled during the making of this film. The direction of Kubrick and the story from Clarke is just..... mind blowing. Simple, yet with so many layers.

Only the Rama books can compare to 2001 in scope. Just wish they would get it out of development hell and make the dam things already.

2001: A Space Odyssey is truly a masterpiece, and among many, is thought of as one of the most important movies ever made, even outside of sci-fi circles. One of the finest aspects of the movie is just how much Stanley Kubrick leaves for the viewer to decide - the story's meanings and intentions.

Technically, its superior image quality comes from the original use of 70mm film. It's a marvelous transfer considering the movie's age.

2010: The Year We Make Contact is the followup, and was not as well-received, but it is also worthy of a look. It's significantly more 'plot-driven' than 2001, and I enjoy it for different reasons than 2001.

I've only seen it twice. First time was probably 8-10 years ago, and didn't really get it. Then about 3 months ago, I figured it was time to give it another shot, since I love all things sci-fi. Got it off Amazon for $10, and was absolutely blown away.

There are probably a good handful of films I saw back when I was a teenager that I didn't fully appreciate, most notably a few Scorsese films. I need to go back and revisit those soon.

You guys have given me the inspiration to watch it again. I've seen it about a half-dozen times over the years, but my Blu-ray copy is still in its virgin state! I guess it's time to de-flower her!

Not much that I can add here, but found it boring first time I watched it.Think I was about 13 or 14.However,watching it some 10 years later it was one of those movies which captivates you.It truly is a seminal movie which leaves you-for lack of a better word (not native englishspeaking)-awestruck.

Saw it on blue-ray,but on a non-hd screen, and it was brilliant there.None of that jpg'ish moments of the DVD version, and colourbanding.Gonna give it some months and view it in glorious 1080p

Congratulations on viewing it in HD.Much better than VHS copy of a copy

I LOVE this movie. It's in my TOP TEN favorites.

It took me multiple viewings to REALLY appreciate it. I first saw it in the early eighties and thought that it was OK, just an average sci-fi flick. I would watch the re-airings of it every couple of years or so only because I am a huge Sci-Fi fan. However it was not until I bought the DVD a few years ago that I FINALLY saw the absolute genius in it.

One scene that I really love is when one of the
[Show spoiler]pods rotates in space to line up with astronaut Frank Poole right before it attacks him!
That image is creepier than anything from his movie 'The Shining'

.

I watched the film for the first time last week. I had been looking forward to watching it because my favorite type of movies are the ones that make you think and have a significant amount of symbolism empoyed. I hate to judge this film after only one viewing, because I feel that most complex films deserve more than a single viewing to truly judge. However, for the sake of conversation, I did not enjoy the film one bit. I admit that I have not analyzed it enough to truly understand it yet, so my opinion is absolutely premature. I do have a great appreciation for the direction of the film, as I think that it is Kubrick's best directed film. I also have great respect for how ahead of its time it was. I just really could not get into it. I will be interested to see what I think of it upon a second, closer viewing.

This is one of the greatest films ever made in any genre. I think I was 13 when I first saw it, in a pan-and-scan television broadcast. I was spellbound and awed. I saw it again a few years later on VHS and had the same reaction. I finally got to see it on the big screen in the 1990s with a pristine 70mm print. Seeing it on a large screen and finally in the OAR was like seeing it again for the first time, and I fell in love with it all over again. I plan to purchase the Blu-ray soon.

2001 was a wild ride! Then again its the 60's lots of people dropped acid , in fact i knew people back then that dropped acid and then saw the movie.

I think the way this movie was made refects the times we lived in. When i see young people today say they liked it ,there's got to be something to that film. I must confess i still don't get it!

I consider it a masterpiece too.

Imagine yourself seeing it in 1968. Think about the sci-fi movies made up until that point. Most were campy, laughable, or downright bad. Remember that very few special effects were available.

The set and the models are very convincing. Kubrick gets a lot of the details right, such as no sounds in space.

If this were made today, it would be considered technically sound. For 1968 it was a brilliant achievement.

I like the way it uses music and the scenes are allowed to develop slowly.

That film is best the first time. it was a great experience, especially on blu. I tried watching it a second time but I couldnt finish it because it was too boring. Maybe third time is a charm?
