Are you kidding?

It may not be for everybody, but it is a highly-regarded film that has stood the test of time. If you have any interest at all in sci-fi, or even if you don't but are interested in filmmaking with a "different" approach, you need to see it.

I'm not replacing all my DVDs with BDs, but I have 2001 on pre-order and I can't wait to get it.

It's a classic in terms of the revolutionary style of the movie as well as being brilliant in conceptually. You have to realize that these are concepts from the 60's and they are still a smarter take on AI than most sci-fi movies today. A movie like I Robot had 40 years to improve on the ideas and still comes off infinitely less intelligent than 2001.

Default A Science Fiction and Film Classic

It is a unique film and a great example of the state of the art of special effects imagery before the days of CGI.

It is very interesting to compare this 1968 projection of what the year 2001 would be like, to a film like United 93 and a real-life 2001 odyssey. Many things in United 93 would have been considered science fiction in 1968, but it's not exactly the way 2001 - A Space Odyssey invisioned it.

However, 2001 - A Space Odyssey is metaphoric on many levels, it is not just a story set "in the future".

Also has what is perhaps the greatest transistion scene in the history of cinema OR at least a flip of the coin with the the one in Lawrence of Arabia.

This is a true sci-fi film. This is one of the greatest films of all time. Even though many people might not understand it or like it, it has stood the test of time.

The MOST important thing to remember about this film is that it was made before we landed on the moon! The effects are amazing if you consider that none of it was in 0g and none of it was in space, and there are no computer graphics!
Its artistic vision is unrivaled and its story has become a modern day classic with themes that are still relevant today.

See it! I already have it on pre-order.

Impossible not to get at least 2001 and The Shining. I'll probably get them all.

Another thing, most people lately have seen 2001 only in tiny 300p images where you can say: My God, where are the stars? (I have the PAL disc that gives 10% more than that, and like Bond says, the World is not enough), while 2001, being shot in 65mm negative, was designed to be seen big and look like a first generation image.

Hopefully the BD will bring back some of that excitement.

One of my very favorites. Unbelievably well constructed for its time. You have to force yourself to remember as you watch that it is nearly 40 years old, because the visual effects have stood the test of time so well.

I mean... just seeing the Earth from space, that scene alone is a mind-blower in context, because to that date mankind had not had any such view of our home planet as seen in the movie. Digital watches were still two years away when this was made!

Kubrick was an absolute visionary.

Again, that's impossible to answer. 2001, one of the greatest SF movies ever - put it thru some sort of DTS system and play it LOUD. Amazing.

The Shining, one of the best horror movies ever. Simply stunning.

A Clockwork Orange, just one of the most original movies ever.

I also just love Eyes Wide Shut. It gets madder and madder as it goes, which a lot of people state as a reason NOT to like it. I think it's sublime.

In fact, just buy them all (is there a box set?). I am.

Cheers.

And much like 2001 so many other movies have used aspects from that too. I don't mean to sound as a total cliche but they just don't make movies like that anymore.

It may sound like a cliche, but it really is true. I can't think of a great, intelligent SF movie made since Blade Runner / Close Encounters. In fact, I don't think films like these and 2001 could get made now. They're just too leisurely paced, and intelligent for today's modern multiplex audience. Shame really.

I really am convinced I grew up in one of the last, great times for movies (70's, early 80's).

I look at the 60's, 70's and early 80's as the swan-song of non-digital filmmaking. (I came around at the late end of this era, and too young to appreciate it first-hand.) Films were crafted in a different way back then. The transition to digital is as keen as the transition from silent to sound, or from Black & White to Color. Filmmaking was a vastly different art back then.
