Default Is putting my PS3 Slim on top of my receiver a BAD idea?

Title says it all...I am a little crammed for space and put my PS3 Slim on top of my receiver, is this a bad idea?

Thanks ahead everyone.

I heard the new slim is passively cooled so yes this would be a bad idea.

Well your receiver generates heat, the ps3 generates heat placing the ps3 on top of a receiver will very likely shorten the life of your ps3

If you absolutely have to put the PS3 on top of your receiver, then the use of some kind of cooling fan is definitely in order. It's important to pull the hot air away from your components as much as possible.

I would never put anything on top of a receiver or stand alone amp. They do get hot and need a few inches of ventilation. There is nothing physically stopping you from doing it but heat is the enemy, the cooler you can keep your components the longer they will last.

the slim has a fan built in.

I wouldn't put it on top of the receiver since that is where most of the heat is expelled from. Get an Antec Veris A/V cooler and that will separate them. I have a picture of one posted in my home theater folder.

I think it is a terrible idea. The receiver emits considerable amounts of heat. Although, the Slim runs cool, it also emits heat. A really bad combination specially since the Slim has the vents underneath.

The Slim I had ran quite hot and as far as I can tell, the unit doesn't have a fan. Your receiver is likely going to get at least warm after being on for awhile and it's never a good idea to set anything on top of your receiver. Always give it breathing room.

PS3 Slim Does have a fan,
but like everyone says.. bad idea.. I have a FAT PS3 and it is on a shelf by itself with 2-3 inches above, 5-6 inches on each side, and couple of feet behind all open space. With no other hardware near it. Not saying you need this much space but it is best to have open space all around your PS3 with no other hardware on or beneath it.

No, it's a terrible idea! Read your receiver's manual to see how much space is recommended around it (and especially on top, given that heat rises). It will probably recommend several inches of clearence on all sides.

Actually putting your PS3 on top of your amp is a great idea!!!

You can break out a frying pan, put that on top of the slim and cook your eggs in the morning on it. Why waste all that heat?

Definitely DO NOT do this!! Your PS3 & Receiver BOTH need to breathe. You would probably fry them both!

With all the heat you will build up you will be set for the winter...

Not a good ideal at all, frying a PS3 isn't under manufacture warranty.

Just get one of these, put it on top of the receiver, put the slim on top of the cooler, and you're good to go.

Ya know, I'm inclined to agree. If the OP is limited to space and there is no viable alternative, then this is a good bet. I have one of these on my Onkyo (which runs VERY hot) and it keeps it relatively warm, instead of scalding hot like it used to be.

However, I do not have my PS3 on top of it.

Before investing $80 into the Antec cooler, what about spending $20 @ IKEA or Target and putting a shelf above or next to your TV for the PS3 to sit on?
