"So, I'm writing a story today for another publication about the high-def market. Moments after I note a chart that was just e-mailed to me from globally-respected research firm Understanding & Solutions saying that the overall high-def optical disc player/recorder market will grow from 700,000 units in the U.S. this year to 42.6 million in 2011, I get an e-mail about the HD DVD Promotions Group in Europe announcing that HD DVD players are outselling stand-alone Blu-ray Disc players 3-to-1 in the UK, France, Germany and Italy. I looked back at the chart from Understanding & Solutions, which shows that about 40 million of the U&S projected 42.6 million player/recorders will be Blu-ray Disc, with only 2 mil. - 3 mil. HD DVD. Hmmm. Of course, the Toshiba-backed HD DVD Promotion Group does not include sales of PS3 players in their boast of a 74% market-share. But then, neither did U&S include PS3 in their market projections of high-def player/recorders. When PS3 is added into the U&S projections, the U.S Blu-ray Disc market rises to more than 60 million units by 2011, compared to the same 2-3 million for HD DVD. Could European sales prove to be 180-degrees opposite of the U.S market? Could U&S projections be that far off? Neither is likely, especially when you consider that high-def software sales in Europe mirror the U.S. almost exactly at about 70% for Blu-ray and 30% for HD DVD" http://www.uands.com/press.asp |

I have friends over in the UK and from my understanding folks purchase whats cheaper over there. But my friend has both HD-DVD and Bluray. And he's always raving about the bluray. So in short I think the UK maybe changing there opinion soon enough about the HD war if the stats quotes are even accurate.

The Toshiba-backed HD DVD Promotion Group logic is horribly flawed.
Most Blu users buy a PS3. Most dual users buy a PS3 and a HD-DVD player. Dual users don't buy a PS3, a Blu-Ray player and a HD-DVD player. Of course the stand alone PS3 numbers are going to be low. Just follow the disc sales numbers. That's the end result and far more accurate. Last edited by GasCat; 07-13-2007 at 06:43 AM. |
