I wonder if it will include the theatrical cut?

According to the front page, it includes both cuts.

My question is whether they will be two completely separate encodes or if it will be seamless branching.

Considering a) it's WB, and more importantly b), the director's cut is drastically different down to things like color timing and score, I'd definitely guess two separate encodes - no seamless branching.

I'm assuming it will have all the same extras as the US version.

So now the question is: can a BD-50 have 2 different versions of the same movie without seamless branching, WITH lossless audio and all the extras, some (all?) of which are in HD as well?

Well I really doubt we'll get many HD extras. But in terms of the two separate encodes, it should be fine. The original version is 1 hour 40 minutes, and the director's cut is 1 hour 30 minutes. ~3 hours on a BD-50 should be fine, especially considering how many movies 1 hour 30 minutes or longer are fit on BD-25s and have lossless audio and look good.

These were the extras on the US version.

Audio commentary by director/writer Brian Helgeland
Extras:"Paybacks Are A *****" -documentary:
- On Location In Chicago (30:00)
- On Set In Los Angeles (19:38)
"Same Story, Different Movie: Creating Payback: The Director’s Cut" -featurette (in 1080p - 28:34 min)
"The Hunter: A Conversation With Author Donald E. Westlake" -featurette (10:47)

The Blu-ray came on a single-layer disc (and was MPEG-2). The HD DVD was in AVC and used less than 21 GB, including extras. So yes, I think they can fit the two cuts without compromising the picture any more than is usual at Warner.

In all likelihood the discs will be the same for Germany, UK and Spain.

Oh I forgot: same extras as the Paramount US edition.

The only version for me to have in my collection is the theatrical.

I purchased the 'director's cut' on DVD and was disappointed. So, I gave it to a friend.

This is a must buy for me. I thought the theatrical cut was entertaining but the director's cut is much truer to the 70s retro thriller ambitions particularly with the more ambiguous ending. However both pale compared to Point Blank (Blu Ray issue please), the definitive rendering of the novel The Hunter.

"You're a very bad man, Walker, a very destructive man! Why do you run around doing things like this? "

I will end up grabbing the UK version as soon as it comes out. As long as its region free (/me prays). I have the HD DVD Directors Cut and while entertaining it just doesnt do it for me the way the Theatrical Cut does (its one of my favorite movies). Having both versions on one disc or in a set would be absolutely perfect.

September is a long way off.

Hello,

There is a Gallic version planned. We don't have a release date for it yet, but the film is grouped together with a number of other pre-announced catalog releases.

I love both versions of Payback. The theatrical is more of a stylised exploitation flick (I love that swaggering music score) while the DC is a far darker tale.

If the bit about the two cuts is true, I can get rid of the DVD and the HD DVD. Huzzah!
