Default Panasonic G-10, display model?

I am thinking about getting a G-10 50" display model.. Do you think this is a good idea since I dont really have the time to do the break in process? Also, how can I get them to check the hours on the tv, I dont want to buy a display tv that has been used way too much. Best Buy is willing to sell the display model to me for $1170, but I think I can talk them down to $1100.. Any suggestions, concerns, or comments would be appreciated, thanks.

They will probably not know how to check the hrs on it but you can do it through the service menu. Going into the Service Menu is not something people should do unless you know what you are doing.

Don't they have the G10 on sale for $1299?.. So I would think more like $1000 or less depending on hrs on it.

Yeah it is.. They said for most displays they only give 10% off the price. And it came to $1170, but he seemed like someone I can get to go further down. So I take it that $1100 for a display model would still be too much?

Depends on the hours on the TV.

For $1170 you might as well buy a new one, not much of a discount for a floor model.

I agree, WAY to much for a display model. I just bought a 54" Panny Viera V10 for $2199 (demo unit) which is $1100 less than what they sell them for at retail here in Canada, and the display has about 250 hrs on it and was in a store that doesn't power on their TV;s unless someone wants to see them. Compare that to best buy that plays their TVs 11 hours a day on weekdays and 18 hours on weekends, thats about 73 hours a week, on top of that the settings are out of whack and jacked up so that the picture "looks" better, so that will decline the life of your TV as well.

The G10 came out in early 2009, so the TV (if it is a demo) has probably been there for at least 6-8 months.

You are lookin at 1800-2500 hours of usage.

Add on top of that the fact that some of the G10's have problems with doubling blacks.

I'd buy a new one unless they seriously go down on price.

Cheers and good luck.
David

Thanks for everyone's responses and very good points. The display tv was in the viewing room and only powered up when they show the G10 in the dark room.. But I agree with you all that that price is way too high for a display model. Thanks again.

I ended up buying the G10 display model today.. I got it for $1000 and they threw in a 2 year protection plan with it since they couldnt check the hours for it.. Its still under the Panasonic warranty too so I figured why not take the risk...

Anyways, great tv. I tweaked the settings a bit and this tv is AMAZING!!!!!! Thanks to the Blu-ray members and CNET for leading me in this direction...

Congrats. Head over to the avsforum and check out the long thread about this tv with some good pointers on tweaks.

You will enjoy this TV.

Congrats on the G10

If you look around the AVS forums like Grif suggested you can find out how to get into the service menu to check the hours on the television.

I believe off the top of my head that lifetime of the sets is around 30,000 hours. Enjoy the set- there are some calibration notes here in the forums as well (including mine!)

Default Panasonic G10 Service Menu

I just bought the G10 display model from Best Buy yesterday. Today I went into the service menu to check the hours. It was 2238 hours.. I guess thats not bad, what is the lifetime hours on a plasma? Also, it said the count number was 410, does anyone know what means?

Today's Pany plasmas are rated at 100,000 hours before the panel degrades to 1/2 of the original brightness. The count number is the number of times the set was powered on/off.

The SM is something you really do not want to go into unless you are very careful and understand what you are doing.

You can really mess things up in there if you are not careful.

Go to the avsforums and they have a step by step process on how to check your hrs.

I think you can also google it and it will come up.

I'm pretty sure the "count number" is the number of times it was powered on or off.
