Unhappy No LFE from Gladiator DTS-HD !

Hi all

This weekend I received my Gladiator Blu-ray but when I try it on my PS3 I have no Bass at all! I watched the LFE level on my Sony DA3300ES Receiver and there is no activity, even when all hell breaks loose on the opening scene.

Voice and other effects sounds ok, just no bass whatsoever.

If I use the PS3 remote to switch from Bitstream to PCM I get bass back, but it does not sound right and the overall volume drops and seperation is less.

I'm using the DTS-HD sound track on the disk. All my other disks are True-HD and they work great.

I'm thinking of ripping the movie and downconverting to regular DTS. Or dust off my DVD heaven forbid!!

Any help appreciated!

Which PS3 do you have? Slim or regular? Also what speakers and subwoofer do you have?

The original (non-slim) PS3'S cannot bitstream DTS HD MA. They just can't do it. - you will need to let the PS3 send the audio as PCM.

Thx for your reply - I have the original PS3.

I have a Yamaha 300 sub (getting on in age, but still strong). Polk Audio RTi8's front.

You PS3 will not bitstream and will only send a 2.0 signal. That is why you are only getting LFE with the PCM setting. Keep it on PCM and enjoy the HD audio.

Rats, ok PCM it is. Am I losing any quality because it's not bitstreaming? The 2 channel bitstream sounds a bit more crisp. Am I imagining things.

Guess I'll have to watch the movie again!

PS3 for sale btw, going for slim...

Well, depending on your reciever you probabley have more watts per channel in 2.0 stereo. Most recievers drop down when all channels are drivin. That could be one reason but to tell you the truth I'm just guessing.

Not a bad guess, honestly. I didn't think of that myself. There's little to no difference in letting the player decode as opposed to the receiver. They both are using DTS' (in this case) algorithms to decode and decompress the audio, so all things being equal there should be no difference.

I would look at another receiver or an amp if you have pre-outs rather than swapping to the other PS3 (which honestly won't be an upgrade).

Oh ok - so there shouldnt be a difference.

I see I can set the volume from the PS3 control when in PCM mode, which solves that issue. I doubt my amp is out of breath - I have 100w x 7. I think it's just the volume issue.

Yet, I could've sworn the sound is crisper when bitstreaming!

Taking my PS3 off the classifieds under your advisement I have linux running on it & all, would be sorry to lose that, apparently the slims can't take another OS.

not to be a joy kill more of FYI but here are some bench tests that do show a drop with 5 channels driven aposed to 2

Sure, but the channels are not driven at 8 ohms constantly. I can pick up differences in general quiet dialogue.

theres no discernable difference in using pcm or bitstream unless ur using a seperate amp and really high end audio equipment the difference ur noticing is jus as stated above 95% of receivers will not push ITS RATED WATTS IN 5.1 OR 7.1 TRACKS THATS WHY 2.0 TRACKS OR STEREO WILL ALWAYS SOUND SO MUCH BETTER as you describe it(4give the caps hit the lock n didnt notice n 2 lazy to retype this) on top of this 100 watts minus resistance and ohms times distance in speaker wire length will most likely only give you 80-85 watts and at a 7.1 track im pretty sure that number will drop even more this is a big reason people use a seperate amp youll get the rated amps guaranteed always
