Default Panasonic BD "blanks" pricing

Panasonic has announced the price of their disks
http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs...42006021803031

from US$60 for 50GB R/W Dual Layer to 17.99 for single layer 25GB Write once - although these prices are high, I don't think it's time for Toshiba to start celebrating as I think the prices will fall dramatically very quickly

I don't think the price for a single layer-disc is that expensive. The dual layer-discs are but then HD-DVD doesn't have anything to match that but what concerns me more about the $43 dual layer-disc price, is what the price of dual layers movie discs will be.

Recordable discs historically start at high prices - especially for premium products such as the dual layer 50GB variants, but fall rapidly with increasing demand and production. For various reasons HD-DVD is currently focussed upon playback only - which is hardly going to produce any demand for recordable discs. In contrast, both BD and HD-DVD are aiming for mass production and high demand for movie discs from early on, so initial recordable disc prices cannot be directly compared with playback only discs...

Prices will have to come down rapidly. Currently they are more expensive that magnetic hard drives.

80GB can be had for less than $50. Granted a hard drive is bulky but for total storage it's cheaper and faster.
