Default 1080P vs Size: 42"1080p VS 52"720p/1080i(600Hz) ... What would you suggest?

Hi to all,
I am planning to update my current LCD Samsung 32" with a bigger one to take advantage of my Panasonic BD60.

I can afford a FullHD 42" which I think is enough for my little house................buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, last weekend I saw a Panasonic 52". In fact, It was connected to a bd60 and the images and frame rate motion were espectacular.

Both TVs are like $970 usd.

So,
42" FullHD VS 52" Not-FullHD

This mainly depends on your seating position. If you could arrange seating so that it is about 5-6' away from the TV set you could get full benefit of Full HD 42" set. If your seating distance is about 10-12', the benefit of 42" Full HD set diminishes.

Anyhow, if I were you, I would go for the 42" Full HD set and try to arrange the seating as close as possible and enjoy the full HD set.

That is a great question. I have always insisted that I would not buy another TV unless it is Full HD. Otherwise why upgrade? But in this case you are getting a full 10 inches more. But that 10 inches more is a factor in why you would want 1080p in the first place! That is to say, you would really probably notice a sizeable difference in the quality of a 1080p 52" vs a 720p/1080i 52". But the comparison here of course is between a 42" Full HD and a 52" 720p.

If you saw it last week hooked up and you think it looked really good I would say go for the bigger one. Bigger always has more of the awe factor, I believe. Like when your friends or family come over, I think they would be more impressed with a bigger screen size than the larger resolution (most of the time). And if it looked good hooked up to blu-ray then you win both ways.

I currently have a 42" tv... that is FULLHD. It is great and I do notice a difference compared to a friends 40" non HD.

That being said I think the 42" is too small for me. I am hoping to buy a 60" in the near future.

SO... my advice is to wait a little longer and get a 52" that is FULLHD. I have seen then for about $1200 US... so I am sure that extra money would be worth it.

Ok, thanks for your replies.

Let me tell you one more thing:
This 52" screen is 600hz, which I think it is something to consider also.

Did you say how far you will be seated from the set? Check the charts to see if the Full HD set will even matter. If not go with the 52" I say bigger is better. It is still HD and will still look great with BD. Also you could save money and go with a 42" 720p and unless you are <5 feet away you will not notice a difference. Just a thought. Ether way they make a great set. good luck with your purchase!

Yes, wish to find out the seating distance - really depends on it. I expect the best is to go fo the Full HD set and get close to it as much possible to fully enjoy Full HD.

Itīs not a big distance because my house is like an apartment.

I think it should me something like 6-7 feet away, that according to the chart, with 50"-7ft, you enjoy the full benefit of 1080p.

Certainly you should go for the 42" Full HD set, if you can managed to be about 6' away from it. You will enjoy full HD picture at that distance.

Go with the full HD set. I actually bought probably the same one you're looking at a few months ago; the 42" 1080p Panasonic and love it. By comparison, my dad has a 720p 50" TV and I really think the picture quality on his looks like crap after going back and forth between the two really quick.

It is good that you can do this type of testing. It would be interesting if you could check the difference in PQ for different distances from the screen. Check 6', 8, 12' etc. and tell us at which pointy that you cannot see any difference of PQ in 1080p and 720p sets. Possibly you should use the same blu-ray movie - one with good PQ.

I have a samsung 40 lcd (2 inches smaller than the 42 you are looking to buy) I am sitting 10 feet away and watching the tv hurt my eyes.. it was too small and gaming wasapain. I would site on the floor in front of the tv because it was too small. So i picked up a 50" plasma, 720p, but i can sit on my couch now and enjoy. Not too mention the PQ is better on this 720p TV than my brothers Samsung 1080p LCD
