Go with the full HD set. I actually bought probably the same one you're looking at a few months ago; the 42" 1080p Panasonic and love it. By comparison, my dad has a 720p 50" TV and I really think the picture quality on his looks like crap after going back and forth between the two really quick.

It is good that you can do this type of testing. It would be interesting if you could check the difference in PQ for different distances from the screen. Check 6', 8, 12' etc. and tell us at which pointy that you cannot see any difference of PQ in 1080p and 720p sets. Possibly you should use the same blu-ray movie - one with good PQ.

I have a samsung 40 lcd (2 inches smaller than the 42 you are looking to buy) I am sitting 10 feet away and watching the tv hurt my eyes.. it was too small and gaming wasapain. I would site on the floor in front of the tv because it was too small. So i picked up a 50" plasma, 720p, but i can sit on my couch now and enjoy. Not too mention the PQ is better on this 720p TV than my brothers Samsung 1080p LCD

I am sitting aprox 6 feet from my 46" 1080p,and wouldnt swap that for a 56" 720p.I would go for the 42" fullhd.Maybe compromise and go for 46"fullhd?
