No you don't get charged for shipping as long as you print out the return form from your account online, or what Amazon provided you, based on my experience.

Actually, that's no longer true.

It is best for him to just not open the package and write return to sender on it if he doesn't need anything from it.

It used to be that Amazon would let you print up a return shipping label at no charge previously, no matter what the reason was for returning (technically I don't think this coincided with their policy, but the return label never generated a charge).

But I recently went to print up the return form, and now if the reason for return isn't due to an error on their part (i.e. damaged/defective product), and you are returning it because you just don't want it, it specifies that up to $3.97 may be deducted from the refund price (I don't know if this is a standard fee for all orders, or if it is just what it ended up being for the items I was returning). This is still in progress, so I'll have to see how it pans out.

This is my experience too.
