Default Oppo pulls plug on DVD

Oppo to set up UK Blu-ray base, pulls plug on DVD development

Oppo, the little AV brand with a big online reputation, is setting up a base in the UK to develop its Blu-ray business. During a visit to the Home Cinema Choice office, spokesman Pan Min revealed that the company would be establishing its UK home within a matter of months.
Oppo’s new Blu-ray/Super Audio CD/DVD-A player, the BDP-831 (US designation: BDP-83), has been the talk of the internet since its US launch, and is now available in the UK priced at around £450. The deck has 1GB of internal storage for BD Live functionality and uses Anchor Bay's VRS video processor.
‘We may be a ery small company,’ Min told HCC, ‘but where we are different from the likes of Denon and Sony is that we listen to our customers. Feedback is really important.’

Min revealed that Oppo currently has an engineering team of around 100 based in China working on its Blu-ray products, but confides that the company is no longer interested in DVD hardware. ‘We have sold out of DVD players and there are no more to come,' he says. 'The DVD business is over for us. We are committed to Blu-ray.’

I think that's great news for our European friends. And I can tell you from personal experience that their customer service is top-notch!

This makes good business sense. The market for Oppo's DVD players is primarily home theater enthusiasts who would already be on board with Blu-ray.

this is the only real and true way to move technology forward is to finally, abandon the past. I look forward to the day when they no longer even make dvd or cd's. that is the only way we'll get newer, better devices for our HT's!

Why not. Anyone who wanted a Oppo DVD player had years to get one now.

They make great products.

I guess I was referring to the fact Oppo will set up a base in the UK as well.

To address the issue as originally posted, I wonder what that will mean to their current 980 lineup of products? Will these be phased out, and will we now only see multi-format Blu-ray players?

this may be a play on words. Just b/c they're stopping development, doesnt mean they're going to stop manufacturing their current players. It would not be a good decision financially to do so.

I wonder if this will effect my ability to get the basic Oppo to use as a stand alone CD Player in my system.
Since they wont be produced anymore I have a feeling it will become harder to locate one when the time rolled around for me to make my purchase.

Hopefully they will have enough in inventory to last until the first of December or at the latest the first of January.
I really wanted to add this model to my system because its been recommended by a couple of die hard Audio Enthsiasts as the Best Bang for your Buck CD Player.

This move makes a lot of sense for a smaller internet-based company like Oppo. They have already invested successfully in BD technology for the BP-83, so the tools are in place. Further development on DVD technology and models, would only generate sales at lower margin business since DVD player prices have really dropped.

Oppo made the right choice. If there are any other niche DVD makers, I would expect them to follow before the larger manufacturers like Sony or Denon.

News like this will definitely influence certain dvd holdouts that Blu-ray is the future of the home video market. A positive step for BD. One company down, more to come.

Quick Question. Is the DVD aspect of the players still region free?

Good news. I see more companies doing this. There really is no profit margin anymore on DVD players.

No, not in the Blu-ray players. Althought there are aftermarket solutions.
