Default Doctor Who on Blu-ray?

What are the chances that the BBC will produce any Doctor Who content for Blu-ray? I would love to see the new episodes in HD.

I believe Warner Bros. has distribution rights for the U.S. and the BBC did make Planet Earth.

It seems that it took forever for Dr. Who to come out on DVD and I wonder if we will have to wait just as long for HD.

Unfortunately, Doctor Who (new series) is and always has been shot in SD Digibeta (see the series' wikipedia page) so the best they'l look is on PAL DVD.

It is odd, considering Torchwood was filmed in HD...

Well Torchwood is getting additional funding from CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). Maybe that has something to do with it.

So at the moment the only HD content for Doctor Who would be his right hand…

I think it's got more to do with the intensive effects work required on Doctor Who, from what I've read on other forums. I'm sure they'd be able to shed more light on this on the Doctor Who Restoration Team forum.

True, the new Doctor Who series is filmed in 720x576, but it IS in 16:9 and looks fabulous. I think the best advantage to having both the modern and classic Doctor Who on Blu-ray would be the storage capacity and the potential for fun and informational extras (because no true Doctor Who fan would dare buy it without a crap-load of extras).

If they released the modern series on Blu-ray in the UK, I'd snap that up in a hot minute.

Really? Wow, it looks amazing full screen 16x9 on CBC.

Seasons 2 and 3 were shot HD. Only season 1 was shot SD Digibeta.

Not that I'm aware mate, all the episodes of the new Doctor Who so far is in SD Digibeta.

Quote from Doctor Who wikipedia page: "The current series is recorded in 576i25 DigiBeta wide-screen format and then filmised to give a 25p image in post-production using a Snell and Wilcox Alchemist Platinum."

Upon further research, they've been shooting some scenes, specifically in "New Earth" for the look, but they've been still posting in PAL

I think Dr. Who is also partially funded by the CBC, since it is playing here on the CBC

I don't think all the episodes have even been release on DVD yet. I would just be grateful to have the Tom Baker years on blu-ray.

What would be very nice is if they did a blu-ray box set for each of the 9 Doctors...

That would be totally, sweet, awesome, heck yeah.....
