United Kingdom Doctor Who - Planet of the Dead

Hey everybody, for those Who fans out there, this is the first episode to be shot in HD so does this mean that when it's released on DVD is will possibly have a Blu release too??

Hopefully they will release a box set of all the specials from this year, just might take a bit of time. The DVD is out 25/05/2009.

Annoying thing is, if they do, it won't be the same size as the other series box sets!! (This is coming from someone who bought series 1 again so the boxes will match)

From the IMDB:

This would apply to the vast amount of episodes:

16 mm film (exterior and location shots)
Video (interior shots)

The video part (most of the episodes are inside/set shots) is probably just standard SD so there would be hardly any improvement on Blu-Ray. No better that uppconverting the regular DVDs.

Just my 2 cents.

James

OK thanks for your thoughts guys - it only seems likely and fair to progress onto Blu-Ray too right?

Don't worry, I did exactly the same - as well as the fact that my big version fell apart :P

Did they start filming Doctor Who in HD? I know there was an issue with that for the last couple seasons.

Woo-hoo! (woo-who)

I still think there might be a "season" boxset early next year, as these are likely to be like the bare-bone DVDs that come out through out the year when there's a normal full season.

There will be 4 specials this year that will lead towards David Tennant's departure as the tenth Doctor

From "Planet Of The Dead" onwards, all episodes will now be shot in HD... and it's about bloody time!

The problem with a 'season' set for the specials is that 'The Next Doctor' wasn't made in high definition, so I don't know whether they'd include a standard definition episode in a Blu Ray box set.

Considering the price, I think I'll go ahead and get the individual specials.

Very good point about The Next Doctor (I'd already put that out of my head due to the comedy giant Cyberman robot at the end).

I'll stick with my recording from BBC HD for the time being I think.

Received this in the post today. All material, the main feature and extra, are 1080i @ 60hz (VC-1) on a BD50 Disc. Audio is DTS-HD HR 5.1 @ 2Mbps (48kHz) on the main feature and Stereo on the Planet of the Dead Confidential extra.

Cool, thanks for posting, do you have any in-hand pictures of the case/packaging?

I'm still watching Season 2 (I know, a bit late...), but I was wondering: is this special "stand-alone", or is there any important story sequence leading up to this special?
I want to pick up this Blu-Ray, to see how the series looks on the BD format, but if it spoils anything I'll wait.
