Default How much do you trust used games?

Hey gang,

I have been trying to save money, by not buying any new video games till next year. I'm going over all the ones I have getting more trophies and such.

But I am falling so far behind, Brutal Legend, Uncharted 2, Dragon Age, Lego Rock Band, Borderlands are all out and getting good reviews.

I can get some of them for around $40 on Amazon used, and I haven't even checked Half.com yet. But the question is, obviously looking at ratings of sellers first, how much do you guys trust a used game?

now with Blu tech it is supposedly harder to damage discs than ever before. And if it comes with everything, case and instructions then it should be a no brainer right? I'm just still warry. I've gotten used ps2 games that worked but were glitched in some way, like Psychonauts where every cut scene had botched audio but the game played fine.

(and I know you have to be careful of things like Lego Rockband where the code to export would have been used so getting a preowned copy is not a smart move on that title if you want to export to RB2)

thoughts?

I usually buy new, but I've picked up a handful of used games in the last few years and I have never had any problems.

I trust used games and never had a problem with a single one I bought used(but I guess where I work it doesn't matter anyways since I know before I buy). I do however buy most of my games as new to help support the company who made the game especially the ones published by my most favorite game publishers like NIS, Atlus, Marvelous Entertainiment, Namco(depends on the game same goes for Square Enix), and so on. If it's a game i'm not quite sure about and isn't from my favorite publishers then I just go with the used.

I've been buying used games for about 7 years now (generally from GameStop or Electronics Boutique). These games are fully guaranteed to work. On occasion I get one that is overly scratched and I have had to return it, but they've always exchanged it without an issue. Some older, more obscure games may be harder to find in good condition, but the titles you listed should be very easy to find in good condition. As always, it really depends on the care the previous owner(s) have taken. I'm meticulous with my discs. I bought a copy of Breath of Fire 3 for PS1 new in 1998. I held onto it until 2005 when I finally traded it in. The clerk at EB told me he had never seen a PS1 game that looked new.

To wrap up, used games are a great way to save money on great titles. Just a little advance buyer beware. Make sure you buy the game from a source that will exchange it for you if it has an issue. If you buy 3rd party from someone that will not give you that guarantee, you take your chances.

I buy used games fairly often and have never had a problem with one before. If you're purchasing from Amazon/eBay, check the seller's ratings before purchasing.

I don't like them, simply based on a cosmetic point of view. I hate scratches/smudges/unknown residues.

I remember when I was in highschool, someone I knew would take games he was gonna sell to GS, throw the read-side of the disk on the floor, and then start spinning it with his feet, leading to scratch-ville. He did this in order to get back at low buy-back prices. Knowing psychos like that are out there, I make it a point to buy new.

I dunno what was worse, what he was doing, or the fact GS accepted all his disks.

I have only bought a hand full of used games and no problems what so ever with any of them. Also I have a bunch of broke friends who usually only buy used games and they haven't had a problem that I know of.

buying USED games @ gamestop = the way to go

you have 7 days to return a used game/used accessory for FULL REFUND

a new game........once you open it you can only 'trade it in' for half of what you paid in cash

I buy and sell used games all the time. I have never had a problem. You might also want to look into trading games. I trade games at http://www.tradegamesnow.com and http://www.gametz.com. It is a great way to save money on games.

While I've never had a problem with used games, I think it's fair to point out that blu-ray discs are not completely immune to any damage. They can crack, although in fairness this is something that seems more likely to happen, for example, with movies you rent from Netflix (and even then it's relatively rare).

I had no idea Gamestop even took back scratched up discs! Even still, if I'm buying a used game from Gamestop, I make my personal business to check for scratches before purchasing...but then again thats just me!

Gamestop is ok for used games. Like others have said, they fully guarantee their copies. So, you can return them if they don't work.

Now, if they can have more copies with their original cases and manual that would be better. I can't stand those generic cases. I know they do this online, but they should have the guarantee and the B&M stores too. Honestly, how hard is it to keep the original cases and manuals?

They charge a 'refurbish' fee at the ones I go too. I never have traded in my games but my friends do and they get gipped.
