I searched through the forums to see if I could find anything already posted about this but nothing came up, hence the new thread. Just had this delivered from yesasia.com on blu this afternoon. Unable to really do much at the time considering it was lunch break and I had work to get back to, but I did eyeball the first couple of minutes if only just to confirm that it has English subs. Looks pretty stellar, even considering it is basically just a bunch of foam monsters getting beat up by Ultramen. Has anyone else had a chance to pick this title up and what are your impressions. I'm pretty stoked to add it to my inventory of blu's... for those who have seen it, do the previous modern renditions of the Ultraman universe already available on blu live up to what I've so far seen in this one? Just curious ultimately, but feedback is always cool!

Thinking of getting this too. The trailer looks cool. Hope to hear more feedback from aeric.

I haven't yet had a moment to check this title out, but tomorrow I'll be viewing this title followed by a viewing of Hakaider (alas not on blu). I'll definitely be putting up my impressions later tomorrow night once I've run it through the player and had a chance to check out the extras!

I'll pretty much bypass the plot entirely here, after watching my blu yesterday. From what I understand it's one of the first Ultraman movies to take place in the Ultraman galaxy, though I'm a bit unfamiliar with past Ultraman storylines. It's pretty much non-stop battles between Ultramen and giant monsters, with some humans thrown in controlling giant monsters that fight other giant monsters. Oh, and there's the evil Ultraman Belial, who pretty much owns any Ultraman that tries to take him on. It's entertaining, though not nearly as somber as the trailer makes it to be.
Picture-wise, the movie looks fantastic on blu once you get past the director's chosen look. A lot of the scenes are very soft, but it helps to detract from any fakery that you may spot in a particular costume or set, though at the same it doesn't skimp on the detail. Costumes look great in general, and there's a lot of detail to be found in the masks of the Ultramen. The uniforms worn by the humans in the movie look great as well... dingy and dirty in spots, with some brightness and contrast that is pleasant rather than off looking. There's really only one scene that looks kind of bad, when the characters visit the Land of Light after it's been frozen by Ultraman Belial, there's a lot of tracing and blur, but I honestly think it was intended since it's the only location within the movie this occurs. Other than that, as I said already, movie looks great! As for audio, yeah that's good as well, though my system is only a 2.1 setup, it was still mastered quite well with sound spread evenly across the channels. Also, none of the issues I find with other films where the quiet scenes are far too quiet and the loud ones deafening (The Relic...). So if you're a fan, I'd say it's a must. The import price is pretty steep, from yesasia.com at least, but I justified it by purchasing it right after my vacation where I spent far less than I expected to. I enjoyed it tremendously as did my buddy that checked it out on my setup. It's basically a kid's movie, but it's a lot of fun and hokey in a way that's endearing rather than annoying. And yes, also to see giant foam monsters do suplexes on each other and tail whips. Definitely one I'd recommend! |
