So it is two in the morning and my PS3 is on. That's perfectly normal if I was gaming but not when I'm sleeping. Somehow it turned on automatically. I powered up the TV and it listed an HDMI type error. I just restarted the system and got a crazy green pixelated screen. Didn't look pretty. I shut it off again and waited a bit..checked connections. Powered it up and got a corruption error...lost everything on my hard drive...yay..
![]() Powered it up and just got a black screen. At this point I was aiming towards HDMI or my TV. I used the component cables that came with my PS3..which make the picture look like sh*& who would use these? lol. I was able to get an image but no sound. I switched the HDMI cable to another port and I was able to get sound but no picture.... ![]() ![]() If anyone can throw me some pointers, I'd greatly appreciate it. Should I go to BB and tell them to give me a new cable? Obviously I don't have a receipt and it's pretty old. It was my first HDMI cable. I thought for sure the cable would last me a long time. It cost about $70. Thanks Edit: Another thing that ticks me off is the cables are so freakin stiff. It's ridiculous. I have to fight to get it into the HDMI port. Because usually I have to twist if around....I may just go with Monster..I believe those are warranted. Last edited by sfmarine; 11-11-2009 at 06:37 AM. |

http://www.monoprice.com/products/su...02&cp_id=10243 get a new hdmi cable (get all new hdmi cables) for like 5 bucks a pop ![]() (always get 1.3a hdmi cat 2 cables) also dont forget that if you restored your ps3 your setting is probaly 4801 and your hdmi cable probaly wont project 480i image go to pitcure setting in XMB (when component cable is inserted0 and select the HD pictures (720p, 1080i/p,) also select 48-p for NON hd resolutions like when streaming game videos from the ps store if you used component and got picture but NO SOUND then you have to go into the ps3 XMB and fix your sound to come out from the component cable |

IDK... If the cables are defective I doubt this would cause the PS3 to turn on or cause the HD to screw up.... I'd think you should contact someone at Sony regarding these issues before spending more money on cables you might not need.

its the 2nd xmb menu going from left to right then go down to VIDEO SETTINGS and make sure the settings show the hdmi resolutions or maybe this will work turn OFF the ps3 behind the unit (back left) toggle the switch to off let it stand for 5-10 minutes. make sure the hdmi cable is connected to the ps3 & receiver/tv then toggle the swith back ON the ps3 will read the hdmi cable as 'default' and make sure all the hd resolutions are correct if you cant get this to work i can call you later and walk you thru it. it takes maybe 3 minutes ![]() actually youre a yankees fan, i renig my offer.....lol j/k im a mets fan and HATE the yankees |

Just to be thorough, look inside the HDMI port on the PS3. Are any of the gold connector pins bent?
Also, I believe the cable that comes with the PS3 is a composite cable not component. As such composite looks much worse than HDMI or even component. If you hooked up the component cables you'd need to hook up an optical cable too to get sound and change the audio from HDMI to optical. What brand of TV do you have? Also if you do get a new HDMI cable go to Walmart or Target and get a cheaper HDMI cable. I bought a nice looking Sony HDMI cable for like $30 there (not the PS3 specific HDMI cable). |

Ya composite is what I meant...the ones that came with the PS3. I've got a Samsung. I am probably going to go to Walmart just to check out and see what I can get for a decent price.
Nothing is bent. I never move my PS3. The cables have been removed maybe 4 times since I bought it. Don- I booted it up after letting the HDMI's get used to the environment. I get the PS3 tone/sound when it first boots up but it is still a black screen. I'm beginning to think that maybe it is something with the PS3 settings. Why would the cable give me sound and no picture... ![]() Last edited by sfmarine; 11-11-2009 at 02:36 PM. |

when you powered down you used the toggle on the back of the ps3 (where the inputs/outputs are)? do you have another hdmi cable for maybe another tv or for the cable/sat box? if so try another cable |

This is my only HDMI cable. I forgot that my sat box has HDMI..I'll throw it in there and see if I get picture and sound.
what do you mean by toggle? Power down using the on/off switch in the back? Right now my PS3 is connected via HDMI. I am still getting sound but no picture. I can hear that little sound it makes when you scroll across the menu screen. |

Good call on using the cable for something else. My sat box has sound/audio. So...it is definitely something with the PS3. Looks like I don't have to go to Walmart after all.

![]() the 'main power' on the top right of this image ========================================= make sure the HDMI is the only connection on the output (do not plug in the composite/component cable to the back of the ps3) 1. Connect the PS3 to the TV with the HDMI cable and set the TV to the appropriate input. 2. Start with the PS3 in standby mode. Meaning the switch in back is on, but the PS3 is not running. The red light should be on in the front. 3. When turning the PS3 on, instead of just touching the power button, hold your finger on the power button for 5-10 seconds. It will beep once when you first touch it, but keep your finger there till it beeps some more. That should reset the settings and you should see something on the screen, and you can change your settings from there. Hope that works. |

Thank you, Don! That did the trick. I am very happy now. It beeped several times and shut down and when I rebooted it, it detected the HDMI and I went through a few steps and everything is back to normal. Except all of my previous files on the hard drive but I will live. I'm not sure why the hard drive got corrupted but it's restored and the PS3 is still going after two years and many many hours of use.
