This was the first Star Trek movie I saw, after enjoying it so much, I rented Star Trek 2 WoK since so many people said that was the best. Personally, I preferred the new Star Trek to Star Trek 2.

I have been a Star Trek fan since 1966, was a member of the original Star Trek Club (yeah, there was one), have been watching Star Trek for the past 43 years and I saw this move 12 times. I have all the Trek movies and TOS season 1&2 on BD. This new movie is by far the best (IMHO) because it acknowledges TOS in very subtle ways, shows us how our favorite characters were in their youth and how one got his nick-name. It gives a a whole new start for more Star Trek, how can that be bad?

I left the theater each time with a smile on my face and feeling happy, like something new and good was happening. Not many movies can do that, but this one did (for me at least).

In Star Trek II they spoke of the Kobayashi Maru and how Kirk 'cheated'. While he is 'sitting' in the Genesis cave eating an apple (or something like an apple). In the new movie when he is taking the Kobayashi Maru for the 3rd time while 'sitting' in the captain's chair he starts eating an apple.

Kirk was always a skirt chaser (in Star Trek 6 McCoy asks him "what is it with you"? when he is kissing Iman) and this movie indicates he is the same.

In TOS Sulu said he wanted to be a Samurai swordsman - and in this movie we see him with a sword. IN Star Trek IV when Scotty teases the Plexiglass company mgr with 'Transparent Aluminum' McCoy asks him is it's okay to do that and Scotty says "Eh? how do we know he didn't invent the thing? In this new movie Spock shows Scotty his formula for trans-warp beaming. I could go on and on, but I won't.

It's a great movie without the ties to TOS, with them it will stand the test of time.

But even this annoyed me. Would you really be allowed to EAT during an examination at Starfleet? If so, why wasn't Sulu munching on a Mars Bar or something?

Sloppy writing just to score brownie points!

I highly recommend it!
It's one of my favorite movies of this year (so far).
It SHOULD also be a real treat to witness both the video and audio in HD.

It was a really fun movie. It would be a safe blind buy.

Do you have to know anything about Star Trek though? I don't know a single thing about it. Would I be lost with no Star Trek knowledge?

No. I know little about the Star Trek Universe and it was a good movie. It is easy to follow and to understand. It "starts and introduces" the characters that have become popular, like Spock, etc. It is aimed so that anyone can watch it and grasp the story and what is going on. Of course, if you are a fan, somethings will make more sense and you'll understand more at the same time.

I think it works both ways. If you are fan, it definitely gives some hints and kick backs to the originals. If you are not a fan (like many people I know) it still has enough of an origins type plot that you wouldn't be lost.

It really is a great mix of action, humor, and sci-fi.

IMO It was the type of movie (similar to Iron Man) that majority of people liked.

It's actually probably better if you don't know anything about the original series. The movie pretty much turns the original show's philosophies inside-out.

There is some stuff from the previous films in the new Star Trek movie, but they explain most of it in the new film. You will still be able to enjoy it without knowing anything about Star Trek. There are some things in the movie that only long-time Star Trek watchers will get, but its still an enjoyable movie for anyone.

Spoilers: (Highlight the text to read it)
It is set in another dimension, so you don't need to know anything about Star Trek to enjoy/understand this film. It starts everything from fresh

I watched it with two people who confuse Star Trek with Star Wars (in other words they had no clue what Star Trek is) and they absolutely loved the movie.

Me I'm a huge TNG fan but not a fan of the original series but I still loved this movie and pre-ordered the blu-ray, so I'd definitely recommend you buy this movie.

Well I'm no Trekkie and I loved the movie, as long as Paramount brings the goods as far as PQ and AQ are concerned (and I'm guessing they will) I'd say it's absolutely worthy of a blind buy.
