I'm currently in the market for a new TV and after going through different sites, I've narrowed my choices right now to the two sets mentioned in the title. I was hoping for some info/opinions on the sets Im lookin at. Any info would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance. First time looking for a set with 120hz rate as well.
Sony BRAVIA KDL-40S5100 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+BRAVIA+/+40%22+Class+/+1080p+/+60Hz+/+LCD+HDTV/9222496.p?id=1218062117241&skuId=9222496 LG 42LH40-UA http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+42%22+Class+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+LCD+HDTV/9246737.p?id=1218067378936&skuId=9246737 Last edited by jc_gamer; 11-14-2009 at 05:58 PM. Thanks for the info.
Yeah after going over the specs again I'm still undecided between the two original sets I mentioned in the first post. My preference would be Sony because Ive read good things about this Bravia line. But since Ill mostly use it for gaming wouldnt it be better to go the 120Hz route. The problem though is reading up on the LG set, there seems to be an issue in regard to the audio sync up where it lags for 1 second. Also, between the two is there any siginificant lag on the image? |

LCD's are known to have input lag so you need to research that issue model by model. I previously had an LG LCD that was excellent for gaming. It was a standard 60Hz set, but it had a fast response time which is much more important. It didn't exhibit any motion blur that some sets will show. 120Hz is a nice added feature, but don't let that be the deciding factor because a good performing 60Hz set will be every bit as effective. You should be more concerned with what set gives you the best picture and has little to no input lag. As far as I know Samsung seems to have the biggest issues with input lag. I'm sure they're not alone, but I hear little of the issue with other manufacturers.
The V series Sony sets are excellent looking. I've only checked them out in the store and the picture is very good. I myself couldn't tell you how it will perform while gaming, but I'm sure its very good. The best thing you can do is to go to the store, preferably a Best Buy Magnolia with dedicated showrooms, and compare sets in that environment to get a real look at the color accuracy and black levels. Also look for a low response time. You may not find these exact sets in that room but look for similar models in LG's and Sony's lines. The performance should be similar to the sets you are considering save for a few added bells and whistles. Happy hunting! ![]() |

Major thanks on the advice lojack. I actually had a LG 37LG50 previously and liked the set as well for gaming.
I did pass by a Best Buy earlier today and compared the LG 42LH40-UA to the Sony 40S5100, and it seemed that the LG set had better picture quality. I think my thing now is the difference between the 60hz and 120hz issue. I really shouldnt put too muc emphasis on that, plus Ive read up on it and its pretty much 50/50 on whether there is or isnt an actual difference. I just want to make sure what the difference in qulaity is before second guessig my purchase. If anyone has a 120hz TV and could share info that would be cool. Or a link might be helpful as well. Thanks again to everyone taking a look on my thread and helping out in any way. |

Crap was gonna go ahead and order the LG online but just saw tomorrow's Besy Buy ad lol
For 854 bucks can combine the Sony KDL-40V5100 with a Sony Blu Ray player. So now the toss up is between that deal and the LG. |

Arghh LOL I was about to place my order on the LG set, PC freezes, had to restart, and next thing I know it goes back to 899 from 799 (plus 20 bucks more on the insurance).
Now I am gonna consider the Sony set since it does come with the player, but I already use my PS3 for movies. Guess I can later sell the player on eBay. I might go with another one of my previous TV since I can get it for less than 500 over at Frys. Previous TV: LG 37LG50 |

Ok so now I just came across a great deal for a LG 42LH50 set for 649.
Comparing the final price between the Sony combo set and LG set, the LG Im guessing will come up a bit cheaper. Like I mentioned I already have my PS3 to play movies and games. I'll check them out in store, but was wondering: Does anyone know which set between the Sony KDL-40V5100 and LG 42LH50 has the better picture quality? |

Generally Sony LCDs will be a tad bit better than LGs, but this year's line of Sony models are not anything to brag about. Color accuracy, tons of noise, and not the best black levels are a few of the downfalls. If it were up to me, I'd save the money to get the LG and apply it elsewhere. Calibration, good line conditioner, etc. If it were up to me though, I'd go plasma ![]() |

So far so good. Standard channels are looking the same, HD ones looking pretty good. Started playing prototype on the PS3 and the resolution was really sharp. Really didnt notice much lag on the screen, there were one or two instances where a very slight little drag/fuzz appeard on the ground of the game (only noticeable when actually looking for it) ; but overall pretty cool with my choice.
But since I just got it and stayed with preset settings, Ill update the board later on. |
