Default 360 Sales plunge 61%

And this wouldn't really count the quality problems having their impact yet.

Good news for HD-DVD add-on sales. Not.

Awesome news!! I especially like the part where they got hit with 2 Class Action lawsuits for the 360 being a total P.O.S.

Here's an irony, though for perspective.

As bad as all this 360 news has been for MS, here's their bottom line right now:

http://www.dailytech.com/Microsoft+A...rticle8119.htm

Go figure.

Look at some of the following side links and related articles in that link as well.

The 360 is a thorn in MS's side right now but it's not hurting the entire juggernaut as a whole thus far, best I can tell.

The funny thing is some people are still spouting that there is going to be a price cut on the 360.

I know the idea is floating out there but I just don't see MS doing it since their direct competitor (Sony) continues to be at least $100 more expensive.

Wouldn't expect their core business to be an issue for quite some time given their monopoly status. It will take quite some time for some of the changes occurring in the PC market to create ripples large enough to balance that playing field for sure. No illusions . But I also see the real changes around me as SMB's and smaller developers are switching to Gmail and Googles "mindshare", and away from the onerous licensing requirements of MS to open source software. Even life-long MS devs are dipping their toes. The cost of entry is just so much lower (not free) that a business just can't ignore it and expect to compete in many industries.

But still 1.8 to 700,000 can only be more bad news for HD-DVD prospects..

Don't get your point. Do you not understand how big MS is and how small a part of their overall business the 360 is? The fact that the problems dinged them 7-8 cents per diluted share is huge.

I don't think it's funny or unlikely either.

But the charges for the quality problems and "extra" mfg costs now in place to fix it leaves them vulnerable to charges of dumping products in a monoplistic style. I really think Moore was canned more for jeopardizing that pricing strategy than either the quality problems or the sales drop-off. He f*$'d that strategy or certainly made it riskier to implement without drawing attention of certain people.

With those extra costs being public how do you now drop the price without predatory practices not coming up for discussion - especially given their history. Not saying they won't frop it anyway but they do have an extra hurdle with the added costs to fix the problems.

I have my own ideas about where pricing will be for xmas but keeping quiet for now

I think M$ needs to drop the price of the 360. With all the bad publicity of hardware failures and with PS3 dropping the price difference between the two systems, I could see a 360 price drop.

If M$ dropped the 360 price, I would definitely consider getting one. I actually have been considering getting one now. There are some good games for it and if I could find a new one with a 20GB hard drive for sub $300 (or possibly a used one for $200), it would be hard to resist, despite my hatred for M$.

...I saw an opinion piece (was it MSNBC.com?) recommending that M$ spin off the xbox unit into a separate company - or sell it. That would either kill it forever, or foster real innovation and make it a real competitor.

I don't hate MS. And I like Bill Gates. He's just a nerd that's into videogames, and he's giving most his money to charity.

I would not consider buying a 360 until Im certain these issues are no more. The consoles they conctinue to sell are defective. The consoles they continue to produce are defective. Even if it ONLY affects 30% of there stock, that number is to high to simply push the shit they have out the door and hope the consumer doesnt have a problem with it. Im happy they took the high road and will give consumers the a 3 year warranty, but the company leaves the consumer with no peace of mind (buzz word for today) when the 360 could simply fail and any time. You have to be INSANE to buy a 360 now. I understand they have a superior lineup right now (even though 90% of the great games on that console will be available on the pc as well) but the PS3 is showing its stuff and I for one and happy to own one. I really look forward to this holiday season.

I don't think so. I bought an Elite when it came out (my second 360) and I haven't had a problem with either. Actually, I bought Best Buy's 2 year extended warranty for my Elite so I can take it back and exchange it when they start including the 65nm chip.

Well if I was in charge of the Xbox 360, here's a list of things I would change.

1. Fix the problem with Xbox 360 having the 3 red lights of death. all new units will not have the same design problems.

2. Get rid of the Xbox 360 core system. (Harddrive are a must now)

3. All new Xbox 360 will have a HD-DVD or Blu-ray Drive (I would push for Blu.) Games need the extra space now a day. Special Trade in value for all current Xbox 360 owners, it may cost a lot but it's the right thing to do. Good Customer services means loyal Customers.

4. If Special Trade is not possible, a super low price on a HD-DVD or Blu-ray add on drive for current 360 owners.

5. Price drop. This would hurt both the PS3 and Wii.

I'm sure I would change more, but that's all I can think of right now. Plus I'm not in charge so we don't have to worry about that.

Yes I hate Microsoft. Are you surprised by that??? I'm one of millions. I hated them back when they f*cked Netscape.. or should I go back to when they stole the idea of having "Windows" from Apple.

I do appreciate Bill Gates for helping charities... probably feels guilty for the decades of stealing ideas and ruining corporations.
