Nice article, I would like to see a 3-D movie to see how good it really is. I'm not sure if this will take off, 3D movies will be great once you don't have to wear special glasses to watch it.

Nope, not for a long time, if ever.

Last time I saw a 3-D movie was a Disney Land and it gave me a headache. I'm interested in seeing how different this new technology is.

im a big fan of the IMAX 3-D, SUperman Returns rocked in IMAX 3-D and would love to see more movies using 3-D. THis technology seems cool, Superman Returns was just straight up old school 3-D I beleive so this could be cool. Imagine if LOTR was in 3-D, Crap, I just got very excited......

anyone reading this thread please also contribute thoughts in the thread for getting 3-D encoding into the BD-J spec... a VERY cheap and easy thing to do to bring 3-D films to our home via BD... in FULL QUALITY.

I doubt that will ever happen. Something has to limit each eye to one of the parallax images.

Unless the light source is truelly 3D, tricks like polarization (movie theater) or shutter (home displays) need to be employed.

Although the article makes it sound as though this is totally new, it is still the same old principle that has been in place since forever. One image for the left and one for the right eye. The best method is polarized or shuttered and these have been around for a long time. Difference in their technology seems to also include a special screen.
I am totally into 3D but have not seen real d's stuff yet cause no theatres were near me that played disney 3d. I do look forward to seeing it though.
Best 3D i have seen so far has generally been in Imax theatres.
Harry Potter is currently in Imax with about the last 20 min in 3D.

This appears to be different, and maybe inferior, to the system George Lucas was touting a few years back. The process he was promoting can take and existing movie and turn it into a 3-D movie, which needs special digital projectors to see. He is planning on using this process on all the Star Wars movies and Peter Jackson is interested in using it for the Lord if the Rings movies.

That's Disney Digital 3D, they're using the Lucas system.

I saw Meet the Robinnsons in 3D, it was great!
I also saw Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D, it was decent. They did an amazing job to add the 3D to something that wasn't before.
I saw Polar Express on IMAX 3D, much better movie in 3D. :P
I also saw Chicken Little in 3D... it gave everyone a headache. The objects were too close to the people, and hard to focus on and the movie itself made no sense and was just plainly bad.

I think these were (mostly) successful enough that they should consider making more movies and screens 3D.

Well, They are working on holographic now. So it can happen without glasses or two images. Just not the same way current 3D is done.
Since we talking bout 3D and some of you might have a pair from a movie or dvd I will add the stuff below just for the hell of it.

Someone else mentioned about making 3D out of standard 2D. Yep, sure can. Do it myself with photos. If you happen to have a pair of red/cyan glasses you can see these 3D i created from 2D. Red/blue and red/bluegreen should work also. If you have any of the dvd's like spy kids, sharkboy, shrek 3D those glasses all work. These are not that great since i kinda do them real quick just for fun. When i can i try to make them look as close to regular photo as possible.
