It's already in 1.8.. but in 1.8 you have OFF or AUTO.. AUTO use EDID, but must HDMI Receiver send the signal to the PS3 that they aren't compatible with it (even if the TV that is plugged in is 24hz compatible), so now, if it's the case, you can force it to go 24hz..

No. It eliminates judder on displays that support frame rates that are multiple of 24 (72Hz, 96Hz and 120Hz for instance).

If AUTO works with your tv, use that. Otherwise use the new forced 24Hz option.

Someone has to say it and it might as well be me...

"May the Force be with you."

question is, what happens when you force it on when your display does not support 24Hz? Just because you enable it does not mean it will work, your display must be able to support 24Hz. Not too many displays support 24Hz (or its multiples).

...although the term "forced" does seem to indicate as much, doesn't it? Hmm...I can't wait to try it out, though.

well its not stated as forced after the update, it just adds an ON option.

if your TV does not support 1080p24, then it will just display a nice black picture for 30 seconds until it resysncs to whatever your tv does.
if your tv does support proper and i mean display proper 1080p24 and not just accept the signal, then the results are great.

1080P/24 options for PS3 with firmware 1.9

1. 1080P/24 off mode: In this mode the PS3 will always output at 60HZ only including 1080P/24 source material. Most 1080P displays only accept a 1080P signal at 60HZ.
2. 1080P/24 on mode: In this mode if the BLU-RAY disc is 24HZ the PS3 100% of the time well output a 1080P signal at 24HZ. Almost 100% of all BLU-RAY movie discs are encoded at 1080P/24. If you are playing a BLU-RAY videogame that was encoded at 60HZ or playing any DVD then the PS3 will always output 60HZ. If your display does not support 1080P/24 input then no signal will be detected by the display when playing 24HZ BLU-RAY movies.
3. 1080P/24 automatic mode: In this mode the PS3 will try to communicate with the display at 1080P/24 when playing 24HZ source material. If this auto detection process does not detect a 1080P/24 capable display it will switch to 1080P/60 mode. This auto detection feature is not compatible with some displays.

The difference between a 1080P/60 display and a display that also accepts 1080P/24 signals is a non issue if your display only refreshes at 60HZ. To take advantage of 1080P/24 signals one needs to own a display that refreshes at multiplies of the original frame (48HZ, 72HZ, 96HZ, 120HZ, etc). To verify what type of signal ones display is receiving most displays have an info button or similar named button that will say 1920 X 1080 @ 24HZ if you are receiving a 24HZ signal. Then the display will either convert the 24HZ to 60HZ or multiplies of the original frame. 70MM and 35mm film in the theater is at 24fps and are flashed at 48fps or 72fps to reduce judder. 24 FPS material needs to be converted to a higher frame rates to avoid the flicker. No one could stand watching stuff at 24fps.

You cannot "Force" anything. Remember, no means no!

Don't forget about 50HZ as well (for PAL users)

I've not handled a Europe/Region B PS3. But the PS3 from HK is definitely 1080p60 and 1080p24. So I assume that South East Asians PS3s, even though we can play both NTSC and PAL DVDs, output 1080p at 60Hz.
