I am an avid Xbox gamer and have only ever played the 2 Uncharted games on my PS3. What I'm wondering is what would I lose if I sold my PS3, bought a nice standalone player with ethernet and put a little coin in my pocket, or maybe a BDRom for my PC.
I plan on strictly using the PS3 for movies going forward. I haven't been using the Playstation Network at all since I have XBox Live. Thanks. Jim |

Majority of issues you hear about movies not playing are on standalone players. Keep the PS3 and live hassle free ![]() |

Honestly, I was recently kicking around the same idea. Wasn't sure if I wanted to sell my PS3 and get an Oppo player or not. I am the same as you, I use the PS3 for movies, and I play CD's on it for now. I posted on here whether I should keep or sell the PS3 and I got pretty much a 50/50 response. So it really came down to what I wanted to get out of a player. I did my research and found that the Oppo and the PS3 were pretty much equal in blu-ray playback, since I have the slim, bitstreaming is no problem as well. The Oppo upconverts DVD's much better than the PS3, but since I have a very small collection of DVD's, mostly kids movies, that didn't factor in too much. Finally was the playback of SACD's and DVD-A's, and I did alot of research here. I went looking for titles available, looking through pages and pages of information, and decided that most of the music there didn't appeal to me.
In the end, it came down to me, and I decided to keep my PS3, and purchase the Logitech IR->BT adapter. Now I can use my Harmony remote on my PS3, like a regular player, and I get full functionality. Hope my story helps. |

Agreed even if you don't use the PS3 for games it still makes one heck of a good Blu-ray player which is why I own 2 of them.

I wouldn't sell my ps3 if I were you for two reasons:
1. Won't gain much from selling a ps3 and purchasing a good player($100, maybe) 2. You would lose the opportunity to play ps3 exclusive titles like Grant Turismo 5, God of War III, and others. Just thought of another one, 3. If you are a netflix member, netflix streaming is free(no need for an XBOX Live Gold subscription) |

what if your PS3 fan sounds like a vaccum 3-4 times during a movie for about 20 min each time??
I am seriously conflicted about what I should do with mine... besides the fan noise (which I find to be very distracting during quiet portions of films) it has been an excellent player over the past year for me |

You won't make much selling your PS3, so you're losing money there and having to shell out even more for a rather expensive new player. The Blu-ray drive will eventually fail on the PS3. When this happens the Oppo will be less expensive or no longer the best thing around. When the technology is advancing so quickly it's probably wise to wait until things calm down a bit before buying another player.

Easy answer: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
1) If you are happy with BD playback on the PS3, stick with the PS3 2) If you have problems or dislikes with the PS3, pick up a stand-alone (despite the protests of the PS3 fanboys, the PS3 is not a perfect machine, there are issues with the PS3 that bother some people [ noise, power consumption, general appearance, lack of front panel display, lack of multichannel analog output, etc ] - I own a PS3, Samsung BD-P1500 and Sony N460 and all three have advantages / dsiadvantages.) |

Keep the PS3 and here is why:
1. Firmware is up to date. 2. U don't have to go to movies or have cable or satellite anymore. Most movies and TV shows can be downloaded. 3. It gives you the audio and video specs. I had a Samsung standalone and it did not have this feature. I like to make sure I've got Dolby TrueHD or DTSHD... |
