Question Playback of Blu-ray movies, laptop to tv

Hi, ive just bought new tv(LG375000) and im trying to play my blue-ray movies on it using my laptop(sony vaio vgn-fz21m) but keep getting a 'your display enviroment does not support protected content playback' error message after about 5 seconds of playback. It is connected using an HDMI cable.

Do i have to change any settings on my tv or laptop for this to play or is it not possible to play at all?.

I am using Intervideo WIN DVD BD program to do this, is it maybe this program thats not making it possible?

Any help would be appreciated greatly, thanx.

Switch the screen setting to "TV Only"(FN + F7 ?)
You cannot play the disc on both screens.
I also suggest looking into replacing that Intervideo WinDVD BD For VAIO real soon!
Some of the newer discs I have will not play on it.

PowerDVD 8 Ultra or ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre would be my recommendation.

This time I don't agree with DK - the Intervideo WIN DVD BD program is the Sony installed Blu-Ray program for your VAIO, and as such is customized to work with it. Getting rid of it or trying to use an OEM copy of something else is just going to give you problems. I ran into someone else that removed it and is now wondering why he has problems getting a BD to work as he's using an OEM copy and not the installed version that came with his system. Also, make sure you update it to the latest version or you might have problems playing back a newer BD like he mentions. If you've got a BC-5500 drive, check for the firmware update on the Sony support site for your system as well as there was a recent update.

Depending on your GPU, you need to switch the output mode so that your external display is your notebook display - you can't playback BD's in cloned, dual or multi-display modes as HDCP won't allow it. You have to set your notebook to use the external display as your system monitor, and then playback the BD. This is a very common problem we see here and at other forums all the time. Wish they'd sticky one of my posts about it though.

Also, don't forget to redirect your Sound output in the Sound Options in Control Panel. Normal setting is to use the notebook speakers - unless you switch the default setting to Digital Output Device (usually labled either SPDIF or HDMI), the sound won't get redirected through your HDMI cable if you're using one.

Sorry but, wrong!
I have two VAIOs with the Intervideo WinDVD BD For VAIO.
The customization is mainly for remote control compatability(pause, FFW, RW, etc).
It chokes on newer Blu-ray Discs - there is no current update for it either.
I replaced it/them with Corel WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray. Works fine.
Also have PowerDVD 8 Ultra - plays anything.
ArcSoft TMT - plays everything arguably better than even PowerDVD.

There is no longer remote control use aside from volume for DVD/BD playback with these applications.
Oh well, the discs play!

It must be different then with other VAIOs, because on some the installed WinDVD BD player works, and others it doesn't, and on some version 9 doesn't work either.

I notice in your sig you've got the Mat's BD player listed as your installed unit - most of the VAIO's I've encountered where people are having problems are the ones that are using the Sony/Optiarc BD player. If you're using one of the new Mat's BD units, that's likely the reason your system is able to use the other programs. But that doesn't mean that it will apply to everyone, as not all systems have the same BD unit installed as you do - you can't just assume that all systems are like yours or that your fix will work in their systems.

My own system has a BC-5500A player, and I had the same playback problems most people are having. The HP update to QuickPlay got rid of the problem, including the "firmware update required" message. Obviously other 3rd party vendors haven't been as fast responding to the problem in their systems.

You're right about one thing - if you can get the disks to play, that's all that you need. But that's the trick isn't it?

I have two VAIOs, one(2 1/2 years old) with the UJ-210s burner, this one (6 months old) with the UJ-120 BD combo drive(reads BDs, burns DVDs/CDs).

The AR190G in my sig, still has WinDVD BD for VAIO and with newer BDs, it either plays the trailers then stalls, or errors and closes.
WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray(Corel) will play any disc - so will PowerDVD and ArcSoft... both machines

Default Can't get TV to play audio

Hi all

I'm trying to connect my FZ21M to my HDTV to play back blu-ray. Whilst the picture is fine, I can't get audio through the TV, only through the laptop. I think I've set the laptop audio out to HDMI, but would really appreciate some advice.

Many thanks

First make sure you're in single display mode (your PC desktop is your external monitor) or HDCP will shut any playback down.

To make sure your sound is redirected through your HDMI cable:

1. Control Panel - Sound
2. Click on Digital Output Device
3. Click on Default, switching the Default output to your DOD (it might say HDMI or SPDIF depending on your driver)

If it's still not working make sure you're using a newer HDMI cable, and note that audio only carries over HDMI in HDMI-HDMI cables. It's different for HDMI-DVI. Also, it's dependent on your BD output settings - while you can output Surround, unless you've got it going through a theatre unit, your HDTV will only process PCM audio or Virtual Surround. Make sure that your DOD sound settings are also correct for the advanced settings (highlight DOD and click on Properties to open the Advanced Setting tabs) required for your particular setup.

Default I got my sony laptop blu-ray player working on my TV

I'm probably the most un-techy person on this site. I just wanted to share this solution as it worked for me.

I just bought a sony vaio this Jan 2009 - i got that same error message when I plugged in the laptop to the via with the HDMI cable.

Anyway - easy solution that worked for me. All you do is press and hold down the fcn key while pressing F5 (i think it's F5 - just look for the F key that has the screen on it) - that gives you the option to JUST have the TV as the monitor - not both screens playing at the same time.

I got that all set up first - then put my blu-ray disc in...and it worked!!!
