Hi
I bought a PS3 last week in the uk and thus far haven't an HDTV. My TV is a Panny TX-32PD50 which believe it or not, show's dvd's limitations so I decided to go with Blu-ray. Problem is that even though in the Video settings on PS3 i set the component cable to 576p, when I play Blu-ray movies the output is changed to 480p! This effectively makes the movies look worse than pal DVDs! When I play downloaded trailers in 1080p from ps3 website the output is set to 576p which looks brilliant (in SD! ) but when Blu-ray discs are played, the format is changed to 480p. Is there anyway of changing this? Thanks Sorry if this has been covered! Matt |

I believe, Blu-ray does not use the Pal and NTSC system. It uses the HD system 480P 720P 1080i 1080p. All depending on the disc, of what capablity it can show. So it will choose one of the above. Being yout TV is not HD, it would choose the 480p, I do think this is correct.

ok , the reason I think this is happening is because Blu-ray movies are 1080p24. Since your max output is 576p (for a PAL capable TV) but PAL refresh rate is 50Hz, and most European sets have PAL/NTSC 50/60 Hz compability and the movies are in 24p, the PS3 converts the p24 output easily into the 480p60 standard which your TV can accept. Now you may be asking yourself but hey the 1080 trailers output at 576p. Well maybe there needs to be an upgrade to make the machine ouput 24p BDs as 576p60. (Or maybe the trailers you d/l in your area are in 1080/50?)
I don't have a Region B PS3 to experiment with these things but hope that helps you find the correct explanation. Last edited by Deciazulado; 08-04-2007 at 04:37 PM. Reason: european entropy typo |

I have not had time to play with this - but when I connected the PS3 to an old PAL only TV (have to go via an RF converter, it's that old) it will not play Blu-ray movies, but it will play PS3 games and the PS3 menu's. Blu-ray is going to look the same on a PAL TV as a DVD. The constraint has been the PAL (NTSC is even worse) standard not the medium or the display. HD-DVD was initially going to be a DVD with a higher compression codec - I assume very similar to VC-1. The only advantage of Blu-ray over DVD in this case is you are not going to have to replace the disc's for a long time to come.

Hi Folks
thanks for your replies! I think you're right, it must be easier to convert to 480p or something. When I play DVD’s they come out at 576p. Yeah I have no way of checking if the downloaded 1080p content is 50Hz or 60Hz. Hopefully there will be an update soon, or I’ll just have to get the tv sooner ![]() When I copy the downloaded trailers to memory card and try playing them on my PC the picture doesn't show. not sure if this is copy protection of maybe they are indeed 60Hz and winamp and media player can't play that? Anyway Thanks! Lion |
