Default EA Games to cut 1500 Jobs and Sack some Games

Quote:
Local video-game industry hit by Electronic Arts cuts EA eliminating 1,500 jobs overall
Richard Dettman / CP Files BURNABY (NEWS1130) | Monday, November 9th, 2009 2:52 pm

BURNABY (NEWS1130) - Electronic Arts (EA) says it will eliminate 1,500 jobs--an unspecified number of them in Canada--and close several facilities after reporting its 11th straight quarterly loss. EA says most of the jobs will be gone by the end of March as part of a restructuring it expects to save at least $100 million US per year.

The company would only say the reductions are "significant'' at its Canadian operation in the Vancouver area. Its Burnaby studio employs 1,500, while locations in Montreal and Edmonton total about 1,200. CEO John Ricietello says "This year we have had success putting more resources behind fewer packaged-goods titles", adding "we have decided to narrow our slate further" for the coming fiscal year. He wouldn't name the games that might be scrapped.
EA sees growth in online games, which is why it has spent $275 million acquiring one of the top providers of games for Facebook. The top 10 games on Facebook have attracted more than 100 million users.

Same here. I do know of 3 people that left Vancouver before summer because it was going sour back then and felt like it was going to come to an end soon.

I wonder what facebook company they bought. Zanga or whatever only makes those little farmville games. (which might be cool on PSN) but I don't know if they're the biggest.

You know, I was concerned about the games they will scrap until I read your post. You are right, and I couldn't care less what games get scrapped now. I also wish the people who are being let go luck in finding more work.

I just assumed it meant games on facebook. I have absolutely no data to support my guess that it could have been that company.

Yeah i cant see them scraping madden...nba live...or fight night anytime soon.
Even tho people dont like them...Alot of people do like them...Madden 10 i think sold more copies than any madden...and got a higher score than the other maddens also...nba live 10 is pretty good this year too...Havent touched fight night but i hear its pretty decent...

EA was just making alot of off the wall games...They should scrap some and put more time into there money makers.

I feel sad for the people losing their jobs, but it's quite obvious that EA are massively over-staffed for the number of games they put out in the year. around 7000 developers and coders should mean around 30-40 games a year, good quality games at that, while EA actually make around 10-15 good games and 10-15 crap ones every year.

I saw this listed in IGN's Feature Articles on their main page.

Also listed about 3-4 articles beneath it was EA's $400M acquisition of Playfish Games.

You could wish it. But its the Cash Cow for EA so I doubt it will be sacked.

Its been bad for EA the past few years.

You could almost foretell the outcome.

I'm sure those who were laid off will bounce back. The video game industry is very small and incestuous (it's like everyone knows everyone), and I don't think most of these people will have too much trouble finding work elsewhere or even starting up their own independent game studios.

Don't get me wrong, though; I still sympathize with them. I'm just optimistic they'll be fine in the long run.
