Default Why don't studios pride themselves with better packaging?

One thing I hate about blu-ray (besides their MSRP) is that they seemed to forget about unique packaging. Seven, Boogie Nights, Fight Club, Lost seasons, Texas Chainsaw Massacre all come in beautiful digipaks and steelbooks.
Overseas gets nice steelbooks for some movies, here in the states some movies get green cases instead of blue ones, but are we saying goodbye to cool art like the Seven notebook? It'll be a shame if that movie comes with the notebook cover, but housed in an standard amaray case.

I for one think "unique" packaging sucks, they never fit in with the rest (keep cases being the norm) plus they are not as sturdy, and in the case of digibooks they may look "cool" at first but when they are up on the shelf they ruin my life

I applaud the move to a more uniform keep case for all releases

heh, well if they want to be uniform maybe they should all use the same blu-ray case! There must be at least 5 different types of blu-ray cases differing in size, weight, and shape.

They do so because they want that particular movie standing out from the rest of them.

Some movies come with more discs then others that's why they do it. But other then that most fit and go with each which is the way I like it.

I strongly support the argument in favor of keep cases. It would have been so great if the discs in the huge and heavy "Gone With the Wind" box would have been housed in a keep case instead of the cheap cardboard case which will inevitably suffer from shelf wear over the years. Same with regard to the "Casablanca" box and some Criterion releases. Studios please provide keep cases even when you release the film in custom box sets. A keep case would have easily fit in these boxes!

I'm talking about single disc cases. Take for instance a case like a Disney movie, it's slim and has a clip on the opening. A movie like Casino comes in a thicker box. Other movies are somewhere in between, some are slightly wider, or thinner, and have different blu-ray logos on the top (such as being printed, or embossed, or not being there at all).

Not entirely true. There are a couple of variations on the standard single and double cases with slight differences. Anyone who has bought a replacement case of the wrong variety can tell you that, the cover insert does not always fit in these cases. The difference is small, but it is there.

Personally, I don't like really out there packaging unless it is something I can display on a shelf, in these cases I put the cool loking package on a shelf to display and put the discs in alternative cases in my storage racks for easy access. My preferance would be first for a ton more steelbooks and somemore WB digibooks with standard versions offered at the same time or slightly later for those who don't like the non-standard packaging.

I also think eco cases should be banned, particularly those like the Wolverine case that actually have cutouts behind the area where a disc is held. I am all for being more green, but not at the cost of endangering the integrity of my movie storage. If they can come up with a form of eco case that doesn't make it easier to damage the case or discs, I'm all for it, but until then, I'll just replace those cases with ones that are more substantial.

Chris

Gotta agree with that one. Not only the lesser number of good, original movies, but the sad loss of the art of making a good bad movie. It seems that in years past, one could at least count on either camp or groan factor, or unintentional laugh factor with a good number of bad movies that came out every year, but even that seems to be more rare in recent years.

I also like the packaging of the OZ and GWTW sets, except for the lack of a standard sized case for the films themselves. If they had either done a standard multidisc BD case inside or a thicker, but standard sized in all other dimensions digibook I would have been happier, but the rest of the packaging just really was great IMO. I also like my HP Years 1-5 trunk case and my Blade Runner Ultimate case, though all of these are ones where I put the packaging on a display shelf and keep the movies either in the original inner case or in alternate cases with the rest of my collection.

OTOH, what they were thinking with the packaging of the Batman Anthology is completely beyond me. 7mm BD keepcases held together by two spearate flimsy bits of cardboard? Really great plan there.

I care about two things, and that's the video and audio. If the studio can deliver on that, they can sell me a hand-labeled CDR in a paper sleeve for all I care. Not sure why this forum is so OCD about packaging when it's really a non-issue

Well I mainly mean digipaks, like the ones mentioned (but smaller to match blu-rays size).
I absolutely cannot stand huge boxsets like the ones Warner has been pumping out for Oz, Casablanca, and that ridiculous Gone With The Wind box.

hehe, I wish it was just about audio and video for me. If that were the case, I'd just buy a blu-ray burner and pirate every movie.
I buy them because I like having the art, and showing off my collection.

I just want regular cases and steelbooks. Not interested in digipacks, digibooks, and monster sized collector sets.

And I don't understand why liking better packaging means one is any less interested in PQ and AQ. I agree there are some who seem to care more about the packaging, but not all of us who like premium packaging care any less about the quality of the movie.

I wouldn't say I would be happy about getting my movies in paper sleeves, I would prefer at minimum 7mm or the thinnest packaging available for the number of discs in a set, but that is a disc protection issue for me not an aesthetic issue. I like premium packaging. I am a collector as well as a movie fan and like to display movie memorabilia including unique box set packaging, but it doesn't mean I care any less about what is most important, the film and how good its presentation is. My honest top preference for packaging is steelbooks because I like the look and feel of them, but I would not buy a completely botched release because it comes in a steelbook and if I got a top flight release only available packaged in a paper sleeve, I would buy a blank 7mm BD case and print up a label insert for it rather than doing without an excellent release because of packaging. I just don't get the viewpoint that seems to be popping up a lot that, just because I am a collector and someone who cares about the packaging and storage of my collection, that this somehow makes me less of a cinephile. I don't discuss PQ and AQ in packaging discussions because they are packaging discussions, not because I don't care about those aspects or because I think that the packaging is as important or more important. I don't., I think that my liking the movie for plot and content is tops with PQ and AQ equal or close in importance, then extra content and such, followed far behind by packaging, but I do care about the packaging.

What? That doesn't make any sense! There are 2 standard cases that these companies use: Amaray and Viva Elite. The Amaray cases have the embossed blu-ray logo where as the Viva Elite cases have the printed chrome blu-ray logo. I'm not talking replacement cases cause that's not what's being used with distributers. Only the Amaray and Viva Elite cases are used whether its a single, double, 3 or 4 disc case.

How are you getting cases with no logo at all?

Ditto!!! If they are going to make something in a Digibook, Huge Boxes, etc... release a standard version at least. Hell I'm not even cool with the way Criterion releases their stuff.
