Default Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Blu-ray) Nov. 13

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

Nov. 13

Details: Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition (DVD, $40; Blu-ray Disc, $50). Includes three versions of the film: the 1977 original theatrical cut, the re-edited 1980 theatrical special edition, and Steven Spielberg's director's cut, released in 1998.

Why it's important: It's the first time a Spielberg movie has been issued on high-definition disc, and it's the first home video release of all three versions

What's new: An interview with Spielberg created especially for this release and a retrospective documentary.

Plus: Only on the 50 GB Blu-ray edition are new "storyboard-to-scene" comparisons and the original 1977 "Watch the Skies" featurette. Blu-ray, says David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, "will add yet another new and thrilling dimension to this timeless film."

If this turn out to be confirmed, then it's going to be SWEET!

What would make the experience even better is if Sony subtitle all of the special features for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

Sony... *hint*, *hint*

Indeed. I wonder how the other side feels about us getting a Spielberg title before them? :-)

YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! I have been wanting this on BD ever since I got my PS3 last year. This will be $50 very well spent. The fact that all 3 versions will be included is worth the price alone. This is my favorite Spielberg movie of all time. I grew up with this, must have seen it at least a hundred times and I'll never tire of it. November 13th can't get here fast enough.

I don't know where my DVD copy is. Drat!

This is good news though. It means that Spielberg was consulted before SPHE confirmed the release date. I bet the execs at Universal are feeling the pressure and chanting, "It's UCS for us!"

So the first Spielberg title, and a major one at that, goes to blu-ray. In effect, Spielberg has chosen blu-ray over HD-DVD.

Universal need his okay to release any of his movies, and I'm sure Sony is no different.

And no Universal Spielberg titles are announced or released (but when someone on the HD-DUD side did slip and announce some Spielberg titles, notice they had to very quickly and publicly pull the announcement?).

This speaks volumes.

Agreed, Jack. Ken Graffeo was asked at EMA when we could expect Spielberg titles from Universal on HD DVD. He responded that Spielberg wouldn't allow it until HD DVD reached a mass market level on hardware sales. Mass market was loosely defined as somewhere between 4 and 16 million players on the market. This smells a lot like Spielberg throwing his support towards BD and ignoring HD DVD. Spielberg, if anyone, knows a winner when he sees it.

You'd better bet that Sony needed his permission to release this! The fact that all three cuts are included along with a new Spielberg interview tells me that Sony and BD have his full support for this release!

I'm sure that the PS3's use as a BD player has no impact on this decision at all...

OUCH.

Boy oh boy, you might as well ask Ken to bring peace to the middle-east, confirm the existence of life on other planets and invent time travel (presumably so he can refuse that sack of money M$ was offering him).

With Spielberg in the game now, hopefully he'll fully support Blu-ray and force Universal to release his other movies on the format.

By the way, what other Spielberg movies are non-Universal?

Man, this is GREAT! I believe I've only seen one version of Close Encounters (the 1977 version).
