i sent a message to universal. i dont like this idea and told them to take notes from disney if they really want to include a dvd for people to use. it seems to me (as i mentioned to them) that most people here dont like this idea and will actually make them think twice before buying a movie rather than make them want to buy which isnt good for business

+1. I have had too many issues with flipper discs on dvd and hd dvd. I will not go through anymore headaches even for my favorite movies. I gave up all Warner releases with no lossless audio and I will give up Universal flipper discs. Screw you Universal until you get it right. No flippers!!

+1 this is the only problem I had with the old HD DVD combos. The lack of labels at times. I hated it when titles were only found on the inner ring in small typeset.

When people were complaining about Universal's plans to integrate DVD to previous releases a few weeks ago, some said that it was just a repackaging, and had no impact on other releases. Has your tune changed now? Because it appears that these combo releases will be taking production capacity away from would-be unreleased titles.
Hey Universal, I will not buy these flipper combos. |

Not to repeat myself but since this a new thread:
This is the email I sent Universal: Hello: I recently read Universal Studios, in a plan to expand compatibility, is going to release Blu-ray discs with a DVD side. I believe it is a bad idea. The Blu-ray format is a single bonded disc with protection coat, a lot more robust than DVD. This would compromise the design of Blu-ray and make the discs more prone to damage, errors in reading, and other issues. While disc art isn't a dealbreaker, it would be missed. More to the point though: potential compatibility issues would make me wary of purchasing Universal Home Video discs in this format. It would also lead to a lot of problems on the average consumer, where people would accidentally put the Blu-ray side down on a DVD player. This would lead some people think the disc was defective and having to return/exchange the disc, which in turn costs Universal and the store chains money and time. Another issue is people putting the DVD side down on a Blu-ray player and believing the movie master to be poor, which hurts BD adoption and sales. Why upgrade if there's no quality difference? My suggestion is to do what FOX, Paramount, and Disney is doing: including the DVD disc separately in the package. This would pretty much allay all the issues outlined above. If Universal wants to include Digital Copy, they can make use the DVD-14 format. I've been in Home Entertainment now my entire adult life (over 20 years), been there for the birth of DVD and now Blu-ray. It's been my experience that formats like these cause more issues than they are worth in the long term over immediate cost savings. Thank you for your time and consideration. |

![]() If it's anything like the DVD/HD DVD combo discs, it will be a disaster since it's no longer 100k of consumers making the market, but now millions. I'm surprised they got the process to work. Structure wise it seems that it's the DualDisc thing all over again. That didn't seem to last very long either. The industry went back to CD/DVD deluxe editions and we lost the PCM 48kHz/5.1 DD mixes the DualDisc offered. |

The executives running Universal must not be that smart. They stuck with HD DVD to the bitter end, and would likely still be releasing HD DVD titles if Toshiba had not given up. This is simply the worst idea in the history of packaged media. I have a guess as to why they are trying to foist this awful idea into the marketplace.
I pray it does not succeed and that the other studios shun this practice. Initial testing of the BD combo was a disaster from what I have read. Initial defect rates were so high that the Blu-ray exclusive studios at the time gave up on the idea without any serious consideration due to projected costs. |
