Hello to everybody from Australia. Yes we love blu ray in this part of the world as well.
Anyway, much to the dismay of my dear wife, I now own a total of THREE blu ray players. Got the PS3, got the samsung bdp-1000 and now I also own the pioneer LX-70. I'm not going to beat about the bush. The pioneer absolutely blows away the other two players. Actually the dvd play back on the PS3 disgusts me in the extreme, nor does the upscaling to 1080p improve matters too much either. People are also now becoming rapidly aware that blu ray play back is not that great at all on the PS3 and I'm only being fair when I say that the LX-70 comfortably blows it away far behind in every department. I regret buying the samsung as it is only marginally a better player than the PS3, which is not saying too much at all. Besides the merely adequate play back capabilities of the bdp-1000, the build quality of the machine never inspired any pride of ownership. I also disliked that I couldn't switch off the front display of the machine, which I often found distracting. I'll be glad when I sell it. Now on to the Pioneer. Noticed how the pioneer has been universally praised as a great player? Well, the reason is simple enough. The machine is so strong on all fronts, that it deserves to be hailed as the best blu ray player on the market. The terrific build quality gives me that feeling of pride of ownership that was lacking in the other machines and in fact I find all those copper screws very sexy indeed. The play back on the LX-70 is so staggeringly good on computer animation movies (and I own all of them) that I felt that I was watching those movies for the first time. The PS3 and the samsung just don't do those movies justice, because compared to the pioneer, they lacked clarity, detail and definition. The pioneer renders all those gorgeous pastal colors on 'chicken little' so PERFECTLY well that I felt amazed that a movie can look so good. This is also the first time I noticed just how 3 dimensional the characters looked in the movie 'In the wild'. You'll know what I mean when you guys experience it for yourselves. Other highlights of the LX-70 is its capability to render every last drop of detail from a scene. For example, the seal and walruses from Happy Feet are so astonishingly rendered that I wouldn't mention the PS3 or samsung on the same day as the pioneer LX-70. I could go on and on but I'm sure you all get the point. Another opinion I'd like to offer is that I completely disagree with those that say blu ray is still not high definition enough for film, and this explains why computer animation is so much better that film. If anybody has seen the great high definition footage SHOT WITH A HIGH DEFINITION CAMARA of the grand canyon from the PS3 game 'motor storm' will realise that film makers need to use hi-def cameras to get superior results. So I say hi-def cameras+bluray format is the winning formular. I really appreciate the truly excellent dvd capabilities of the machine as well and I'd go so far as to say that its the best on the market. I feel sorry for those people who bought those monster reference Denon dvd players. They are really expensive and are now (oh so soon) superseded. Also the audio qualities of the LX-70 are excellent as well and since I own lots a music dvds I can get them to sound and look their best. I'm using the sony 46 inch 1080p lcd TV and I got the LX-70 connected with a nordost hdmi cable. Sound wise, I'm using a Yamaha sound projector connected optical with the player. The main advice I have to offer on setup would be to change the color setting on the LX-70 to RGB (experiment which works best) and to use the top nordost hdmi cable as I found it gives the best results of the many cables that I've used. Its mainly in color reproduction that cables differ and I found the nordost to be the most pristine. |

All right, how much is Pioneer paying you?
Just kidding, I love Pioneer products. Last year I bought the Pioneer Elite 50" 1080P model when it came out. That was to my wife's dismay also, so I've limited my Blu-ray player expenditure for that monitor to a PS3. And, quite frankly I'm delighted with the results on both Blu-ray play and upconversion of the standard DVDs I've watched with it. That being said, one of these days (next year maybe?) when my wife's dismay wears off I'll upgrade to a Pioneer BD player. Anyway, welcome to the forum and keep enjoying Blu-ray and spread the word down under. |
