Thought I might be the one to break the Ice on these new receivers! I have had the SC-27 for about a week now and I'm loving it. Just need to tweak a little more. I came from a ONKYO 876 which was a nice receiver but it got too Hot for my area. the SC-27 runs cool.

Perhaps a mod could make this the "Official" thread?

Anyway, noticed your choice in words in your post edubb. Pretty remarkable the difference in the amount of heat between these 2 AVR's huh? Coming from an Onkyo to my Elite, it was rather surprising.

yes! with the sc-27. It can be on for several straight hours and the top will stay pretty cool. That ONKYO could cook my dinner.... It was a good receiver though

Yeah, I saw yours as well. I only have 1, but they are loads of fun! I luv freaking out my family and friends when they are over. The look on their faces is hilarious! And the best part is they run off of their own amp, so the Elite is not involved except for the sending out the LFE.

Default Pioneer SC-25 vs. SC-27

Hey all, I was just wondering what the main differences between the 25 and 27 are. I've looked at the comparison on Pioneer's website, but I'm not too sure what all the terms mean. I'm not powering a huge room, you can see it in my gallery, so what do you think the best receiver for the money is?

Does anyone know of any great deals on them anywhere?

If you're referring to differences in power then they're the same. They both use the same amp and power supply as I understand it.

I say go with the SC-25. Like Fireman said there is not much difference especially for the room you have. I have the SC-05 last years model to the SC-25, and it rocks

Biggest difference between the two IMO is the SC-25 is THX Select2 Plus Certified and the SC-27 is THX Ultra2 Plus certified. And this only comes in handy if you are using THX certified equipment in conjunction with the SC-25 or SC-27...and I can tell you that there is only a handful of subs and other pieces of equipment that are.

And I don't really understand that because the difference between Select2 Plus certified and Ultra2 Plus certified as I understand it is performance in rooms of different sizes, which would imply that either Ultra needs more power at some specified distortion level or that Ultra requires the same power minimum at a lower distortion level. But the SC25 and SC27 have exactly the same specs in this regard. So I don't understand how one can be Select rated and one can be Ultra rated unless Pioneer purposely didn't submit the SC25 for Ultra rating in order to have a marketing distinction.

Maybe someone with more knowledge can explain the difference better. Last time I checked the THX site, it wasn't much help. I must admit I trust THX less since Lucas spun it off.

As far as I can tell, the only things the SC27 has that the SC25 doesn't are:
- Sampling rate converter
- Learning remote
- Support for WMA files
- 1 xtra component video out
- 1 xtra coax output
- Zone 2 video can be component or composite (on the SC25 only composite)
- $400 difference in price at list.

Default SC-25 Problems

I hooked up my SC-25 to two HDMI componets ( BluRay Player and XBOX360 ) last night. My speaker wire isn't here yet so I didn't have any audio.

My problem is video quality - my TV indicated that the XBOX360 through the SC-25 was only able to get 60hz at 1080p while I normally get 120hz. The bluray player routed through the SC-25 was only able to muster 720p at 60hz... the PQ was pretty bad when comparing it to what it normally is.

I must mention that I am, for the time being, using a crappy XBOX360 HDMI cable to connect the SC-25 to my TV. I bought a MediaBridge HDMI cable that should be considerably better - it arrived yesterday at my parents house, about 30 min. drive from my college condo. I'm going to get it tomorrow.

Do you think the poor quality HDMI cable is the cause? If not, do you have any recommendations?

Also, do any of you have any ideas about why my SC-25 wont go into standby with the XBOX360?

It would sure make alot of sense if it turns out to be the HDMI cable. The video should be "passing-through" which means it is not being altered or touched in any way by your SC-25. I have almost the same TV, and my video looks great. I'll resolve to say it is the HDMI cable at this time and wait to see what the better one does.

As far as stand-by, my SC-05 always turns off completely, and never goes into any kind of stand-by mode. I have asked this question myself, and no one could ever figure out why I can't, so unfortunately, I can't provide an answer for you on that one.

Let us know how the HDMI cable turns out.

Ne thing to work in stanby mode must be hdmi comtrol compatible and at that isnt guaranteed to work for sure by pioneer's owns statements unless it is their own propriety hdmi control design also known as KURO LINK

Your HDMI cables shouldn't be the culprit at all since they only pass digital signals. You'll either have a picture and audio, or you won't.

I would suggest you check the internal video settings on all your gear. Also, as a test, try bypassing the receiver with the Blu-ray player and 360 to see if the picture improves at all. If the signal improves, there is probably a missed setting or fault in the receiver.

I definitely get 1080p at 120hz with both if they're not plugged into the receiver.

Default Please Help, Just got my new SC-27 and .....

Hello, I just received my new SC-27 today, and I am kind of lost, could someone answer me some questions?

Is SC-27 HDMI-CEC? Cause if it is, is not working with my Samsung UN558000. Will the SC-27 go to standby when I turn off the TV? or are there any settings that I have to change, cause on my previous Yamaha, there was an HDMI control which you put through, and it will turn off when I turn off the tv.

Thank you

Luis
