What are those multi-colored lights that everyone seems to have behind their tvs ? Do they automatically adjust the color light based off of the current tv colors being displayed ??

Not sure who cupcake is, as neither response to your question was argumentative.

Cupcake isn't derogatory, I like cupcakes and I like you.

OP did you ever find the information you were looking for? In case you didn't, there are two popular companies that offer bias lighting.

CinemaQuest

Cyron

Firstly, "everyone" is a gross exageration. Secondly, the only product I've seen that functions as you describe is the Philips' 'Ambilight' feature on some of their TVs. None of the other similar solutions I've encountered respond to the picture on the screen.

Lastly, but most important, is the fact that such gimmickery is destructive to image fidelity. Surrounding a video display with any color other than neutral gray or white will distort the viewer's color perception of the image on the screen. Brighter colors increase the degree of distortion that occurs. Here is a link that discusses this perceptual phenomenon: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=849430 . If you care about the quality of image you derive from watching Blu-ray Disc programs, variable colored lighting should be avoided. How to correctly back light a video display is described here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=223 .

Most of us use these lights for display only, or in my case when I have music playing or the PS3s visualizer on and such. Never for movies, for the reasons that Alan said above - but I did use to have the Ambilight feature on my Philips TV some time ago, and it was a nifty gimmick, but one I quickly forgot once I got my Kuro.

I have seen one or two of the commercially available multicolor LED kits that offer a feature that makes them respond to sound, just not a video signal.

I'm in the same boat. I cycled mine through several colors to take some cool looking pics for my HT gallery, but for movie/tv watching and gaming the lights are ALWAYS on white. I don't think they're the perfect 6500K light that's recommended but they're close enough for me.

My kit responds to music, but I usually don't mess with that feature.

I actually like the looks of mine during TV viewing. If I watch a movie on the LCD, I may or not not leave them on. However, when the screen gets pulled down and we use the projector, all lights are off!

Cool, I am using 4X15" lightbars....one behind the center top of the TV, one within my TV stand at the bottom center, and then one each attached behind my front towers. I felt this dispersed the light better than being all clumped together behind the TV. Plus it outlined the equipment and speakers rather well, which looks cool.

Yeah your lighting setup is pretty sweet. I might do something different if we ever move into a house where I can spread things out a bit.
