Default What actor or actress has shown the most improvement or growth?

When you look at a body of work, what actor or actress has shown the most growith or improvement?

The one that comes to mind is Jim Carrey. Even though he was hilarious early on in roles like Ace Ventura and the Cable Guy, I didn't think much of him. Over the course of his career, he showed a lot of growth as an actor and now he's a top-tiered actor.

I'm continually impressed with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. You don't see too many young actors consistently choosing challenging roles like he does. Films like Brick, Mysterious Skin, and Hesher, just to name a few.

I'd say Brendan Fraser or Tom Arnold- look at their joke comedy beginings, now their sought after acclaimed dramatic performers.

I think he has more acting talent than people give him credit for (see: Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine), but I think he is FAR from a top-tier actor. Reason? He doesn't have enough quality films that showcase his talent.

How about George Clooney and Brad Pitt? They both started off as mere "pretty boys," but have both established themselves as top-notch actors who continually make quality films.

Leonardo DiCaprio is number one in my book. He went from guest starring on Growing Pains to one of the finest actors in Hollywood today.

Agreed... and for a time there I thought he was gonna be a has been teen idol after Romeo/Juliet and Titanic... but he's really turned into a great actor.

Yeah Leo definitely. He has been in some of the best movies over the past 10-15 years. I really think they keep snubbing him the Oscars...his performance in both the Departed and Revolutionary Road was top notch.

Drew Barrymore
Leonardo DiCaprio
Jodie Foster
Kurt Russell

And the always impeccable Natalie Portman

EDIT: Forgot to add Adam Sandler who proved he can do screwball comedies with Happy Gilmore & Billy Madison, dramatic comedies such as 50 First Dates & Funny People, and what I believe to be his best film yet: Punch Drunk Love.

He'll be like Julia Roberts, they'll ignore him again and again and then eventually he'll "win" one for a role but it'll really be for his career achievements.

Top-tiered??? Really??? Which movie(s) would that be???
I think most have grown sick of his "signature" face that feels like he'll spring out at ANY moment of ANY movie.
I know it's just my opinion but the guy really makes me
...and don't even get me started on Adam Sandler.

OK, I'm done...

If you haven't seen Reign Over Me, you should check it out, it's pretty good. And Adam Sandler did a great job in that film

And Leonardo Dicaprio impresses me more and more with every role he does. Absolutely loved him in Blood Diamond!

I would go with Clooney. What he has done this year with Up in the Air and the voice work for Fantastic Mr. Fox has been amazing to go along with Oh Brother Where Art Thou and Burn After Reading.
