I like the idea that more will become available for streaming, but I'm not crazy about them holding out on sending out new releases for an additional 28 days. It won't be spurring me to buy anything I wouldn't have already been going to buy. I don't blind buy movies.

Netflix is screwing themselves with this move.
That gives places like Blockbuster an advantage... I know *I* really don't like to wait 28 days for a new rental, so why would I wait for 28 days plus the day or two that it would take to get to my house? So long Netflix, it's been nice knowing you. Logan |

Streaming on the PS3 is worth the $9 a month. I canceled my HBO and Cinemax cause of it.

Awhile back, most of the major studios signed deals with major rental houses {I know of at least Blockbuster and Rogers up here, not sure if there was more than one Stateside} which stipulated that whenever the rental place rents out a movie, the studio gets a portion of the rental, in return the studio charges less for the rights to renting out the movie {per disk} From what I know of the Blockbuster agreement, it also includes when they pull it off the shelf and sell it previously viewed. I think they'll be leaving Blockbuster alone on this one... Logan |

The studios have it set up in the contract that you sign with them, that in order to rent out a copy of their movies, you need to pay them a premium {with DVD's it was about $10-$20 above the cost of buying the DVD {so about $40-$50 per copy of the movie}} and that gives you the right to rent the movie out and make money off of it. They would be in stupid amounts of legal trouble if they did that. The studios would collectively nail them to the wall and Netflix would be bankrupt in lawyers fees within a week. That would be a class A+ certified stupid move on their part. Logan |

I don't see how Blockbuster can avoid falling in line with this, if not now then eventually. They don't have the weight they used to and with their shrinking market share I don't see how they can resist the incentive the studio(s) will offer in the way of discounted rental fees.
Netflix needs to eventually reduce or get rid of the Blu-ray surcharge. Since this "deal" reduces the net cost to Netflix and because it effectively reduces the benefits of Netflix members they should probably reduce fees across the board. I know they're probably dumping a lot of money into the streaming portion of the service, but there just aren't that many people geared up to take advantage of streaming. |

From what I gather the issue comes from subscription based plans like netflix. Under this the studios can't make the rental sharing agreements like they used to with in store per title rentals. It makes sense that blockbuster online may soon have to do something similar with a delay window. However it seems to me that the store locations could still rent out on release day as normal.
Therefore, if you're a Blockbuster online subscriber you are allowed 5 free in-store exchanges per month. By using these for the "delayed" titles you could bypass the the whole ordeal. Although this is just my thoughts and I have no way of knowing if this will work. |

Streaming is a great option. I just hope Netflix doesn't abandon their bread and butter business of mailing actual discs to those of us who prefer the PQ/AQ they offer. Last edited by repete66211; 01-08-2010 at 08:06 PM. |
