I read that article and I like the idea. It benefits both parties because in the long run, there will be more available for streaming, hopefully in HD.

I like the idea that more will become available for streaming, but I'm not crazy about them holding out on sending out new releases for an additional 28 days. It won't be spurring me to buy anything I wouldn't have already been going to buy. I don't blind buy movies.

Netflix is screwing themselves with this move.

That gives places like Blockbuster an advantage... I know *I* really don't like to wait 28 days for a new rental, so why would I wait for 28 days plus the day or two that it would take to get to my house?

So long Netflix, it's been nice knowing you.

Well their blurays are already long wait times as is it, hence why I cancelled my subscription a while back ago. I might get the basic one dvd just to get streaming on my ps3 though now.

Soon enough ALL the studios will come to "agreements" with ALL rental outfits. Nuthin like being FORCED to come to an agreement. Netflix aint liking this one bit.

Yea I would think it would be with all of the rental companies not just Netflix.

Streaming on the PS3 is worth the $9 a month. I canceled my HBO and Cinemax cause of it.

Just a matter of time really. The only places that will be able to do immediate rentals eventually will be mom and pop shops since they buy all of their movies on their own.

The Studios will be able to stop that as well.

Not if they don't order from the Studio and just buy from retail outlets. It would be more expensive but they would be able to do it.

I think that's what Redbox is doing and they are currently fighting it out in court.

I don't think they will be.

Awhile back, most of the major studios signed deals with major rental houses {I know of at least Blockbuster and Rogers up here, not sure if there was more than one Stateside} which stipulated that whenever the rental place rents out a movie, the studio gets a portion of the rental, in return the studio charges less for the rights to renting out the movie {per disk}

From what I know of the Blockbuster agreement, it also includes when they pull it off the shelf and sell it previously viewed.

I think they'll be leaving Blockbuster alone on this one...

That would void their other rental agreement with the studios.

The studios have it set up in the contract that you sign with them, that in order to rent out a copy of their movies, you need to pay them a premium {with DVD's it was about $10-$20 above the cost of buying the DVD {so about $40-$50 per copy of the movie}} and that gives you the right to rent the movie out and make money off of it.

They would be in stupid amounts of legal trouble if they did that. The studios would collectively nail them to the wall and Netflix would be bankrupt in lawyers fees within a week.

That would be a class A+ certified stupid move on their part.

I don't see how Blockbuster can avoid falling in line with this, if not now then eventually. They don't have the weight they used to and with their shrinking market share I don't see how they can resist the incentive the studio(s) will offer in the way of discounted rental fees.

Netflix needs to eventually reduce or get rid of the Blu-ray surcharge. Since this "deal" reduces the net cost to Netflix and because it effectively reduces the benefits of Netflix members they should probably reduce fees across the board. I know they're probably dumping a lot of money into the streaming portion of the service, but there just aren't that many people geared up to take advantage of streaming.

From what I gather the issue comes from subscription based plans like netflix. Under this the studios can't make the rental sharing agreements like they used to with in store per title rentals. It makes sense that blockbuster online may soon have to do something similar with a delay window. However it seems to me that the store locations could still rent out on release day as normal.

Therefore, if you're a Blockbuster online subscriber you are allowed 5 free in-store exchanges per month. By using these for the "delayed" titles you could bypass the the whole ordeal.

Although this is just my thoughts and I have no way of knowing if this will work.

Most people are using either the PS3 or a newer Blu-ray player that is capable of Netflix streaming. That one LG players was only $129 recently.

I've been with Netflix for a while and I have yet to order one movie to actually be delivered to my house.

I wouldn't say "most" Netflix subscribers take advantage of streaming, but with all the different devices out there the number is almost certainly growing. I have streamed via PS3 a few times, but only documentaries. The two movies I tried to stream were in 4:3, so I quit immediately.

Streaming is a great option. I just hope Netflix doesn't abandon their bread and butter business of mailing actual discs to those of us who prefer the PQ/AQ they offer.
