My wife and i recently went to Prescott (pronounced Press-kit by locals), Arizona to visit a friend and go check out some of the off the beaten path areas. one area i loved had anasazi ruins. they were small but mostly intact and extremely cool. it took 2 hours of off roading, a mile or so of hiking up switchbacks, and walking along a cliff edge to get to them. but it was awesome. seeing these ruins has made me really interested in finding more. Not necessarily anaszi ruins but just indian remnants. petroglyphs, adobe ruins, anything that still survives from the native americans. I've been to mesa verde where the huge cliff structures are but am looking for things in the southwest that are off the beaten path. that may take a few miles of hiking to get to. does anyone know of any places like this or of any websites that can point me in the right direction?

thanks. i would love to find more stuff like this. even if its not on a cliff edge overlooking a valley. anything that is still there after 700 years is pretty amazing. i've google searched trying to find a map or guide to some other areas. but no luck.

I've hiked to dozens all over the country.
Obviously the greatest concentration of them are in Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. Mesa Verde in Colorado is my favorite. Those Anasazi cliff dwellings are ridiculous. Bandolier in New Mexico is great, too. Lots of good hiking there. (Better than Mesa Verde in my opinion). I can e-mail you pictures later on; they're at home, unscanned, and I have no idea how to upload them to the Internet for you... |

Cool pics! I too have an interest in history, anthropology and ruins. I live in the Midwest where the Native Americans', being nomads, had less permanent dwellings. I'm afraid I can't help you, but I wish you success in your quest.

I took 2 months one summer in college and went on a Geology and Anthropology Field Study. We started in southeast Georgia and made our way over to Washington and everything in between. Climbed all over the Grand Canyon, up Mount St. Helens, Yellowstone, Yosemite, etc., and then all the anthropological places in between. Incredible time. Just camping, hiking, and driving. |
