Default What codec will be used ?

Just building 1st dedicated HT , 7.1 inwall/ceiling setup . Already have Onkyo 706 and LG 50PS30 , will be getting higher end LG , Samsung or Panny BD player later on when finished build .

Question is what format will be played if a movie , for instance " Dinosaur " regular DVD release that has ' Digital Sound ' , ' DD ' , 'DTS ' and ' THX ' on the cover . Im assuming the 706 will be doing the decoding not the BD player , so does it just pick the best one it thinks and giver ? I just read big daddys post and my brain hurts but i learned alot i hope

Sorry if this is ridiculous question , trying to figure it out before build is done ,want to get most out of system i have and try to understand most of what the heck its doing heh

There will be one or more audio tracks on the disc. The player will use the one you select on the disc audio menu. (If you don't make a selection, the disc will use whatever track was set as the default when the disc was authored.) Many Blu-rays only have one English language track and that what gets played. But, some studios include two or more tracks and the highest quality one is not necessarily the default. Warner Bros. TrueHD releases usually have a regular DD 5.1 track as the default and you need to select TrueHD on the audio menu to get the lossless version.

also you may not have known this, but for your dvds that had dts tracks, they also had dolby digital, and all default to dolby digital unless you specifically choose the dts track, sometimes this choice process was made obvious by the menu, othertimes you had to dig in the audio selection menu. the same is true for bluray like the other poster said. you need to go in the audio menu and choose the format you want to listen to as sometimes the default is not necessarily the highest quality track. or there might be other features such as the original mono soundtrack that was released with the film for the diehard film enthusiasts who want to reproduce the original release as closely as possible.

Right on thanks Bislander and Kevin , im curious to what my setup will pick by default , i would assume like i said above that my Onkyo 706 will be the final decoder which has TrueHD , DTS HD-MA , and is THX certified . But if its as easy as going into the Audio menu and picking the best , thats great ! thanks again

The receiver wouldn't pick anything by default, the disc would just come with one on default. However, is all you have to do is click AUDIO and then the AUDIO YOU WANT TO HEAR. And there you go, you have the selected audio format, as long as your player performs it, which it does. Enjoy.
