Default why Microsofts codec?

I just heard VC-1 will be part of the standard.

Why was it chosen when there are already better codecs on the market?

From my personal test (with MV9) I can say that ON2's VP6.2 already has a much better picture detail and sharpness than Microsofts codec.

Unless VC-1 is much better then the Media 9 codec, I can see no reason why
to use it as a standard.

Does anyone know why VC1 was chosen and why other technically superior codecs lost? Even the open source codec Xvid beats the microsoft codec in quality !
