Default PS3 60GB will not play Blu-Ray movies to end

We have a PS3 60GB that has Sony stumped. The unit plays PS1, PS2, PS3 games, audio CDs, and DVDs flawlessly. When playing back Blu-Ray discs (brand new) the PS3 freezes after 10-12 minutes of playback and eventually gives an error message of "invalid disc" or "this disc cannot be played." Exchanging the new discs (same titles) causes the exact same result. Sony suggested the discs were the problem, because the unit plays PS3 Blu-Ray games without difficulty. I upgraded the software from version 2.17 to version 2.42 and reset all defaults, and have the exact same result. Now Sony wants me to return the PS3 to Texas for repair. Has anyone else experienced Blu-Ray playback freeze on their PS3? I searched, but this is my first post.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I've heard of the PS3s not being able to read disc (Games and Movies), but not like your problem.

So far no problems out of my PS3 60GB

...ok, this is out of left field and may/may not help your problem.

But I recall long time ago the 20/60gb versions use to have trouble during play back because it was always trying to connect to the net while playing a movie.

so, maybe try turning off UPnP and the Media Server Connection. (or even try disabling the whole Internet Connection completely?)

...probably will not help, but trying anything is better than sending it back.

That's the only thing I can think of also... but was supposedly fixed in a previous firmware update. I would definitely try disconnecting from the internet, though, and then try watching a movie and seeing if it works.

If not, then let Sony send you a fixed one (they won't send you yours back, BTW). They'll check yours in and send you a refurb 60GB that's been fixed. It kind of sucks, but the whole process only takes about a week from the time you ship yours off till you have a new one in hand. I did a write-up of my experience doing the same last year (with pics) here, if you care.

I just had to send my 60 GB PS3 to Texas for repair. I was watching SWAT and it froze right in the last few minutes, and gave me error messages like you got. (invalid disc...etc) So I tried to play Call of Duty and it would freeze up after one match. It got to the poiint where it wouldn't recognize BDs and would restart if I tried to put one in, and wouldn't recognize some games. So, I sent it for repair last wednesday.

My 60GB PS3 has this problem now.

It won't read blu-ray discs (movies or games) but plays DVD's and CD's flawlessly.

Anybody have any new advice on this issue? Sony was of no help (obviously).

Any info will help.

Sorry to be the one to break this to you, but you can't fix this issue, unless of course you replace the hardware inside of your ps3. I've heard of this issue several times before, and all end up turning out the same way; the ps3 dies. Send it in to sony for repair, and if it's not under warranty anymore, be prepared to pay for repair, or shop around for a ps3/stand alone player.

Thanks for your input. I'm pretty sure it is either the lens or the blu-ray drive entirely. I'm probably going to have to buy a new PS3. As far as troubleshooting goes, I still haven't vacuumed it (in case it is dust on the lens). But all signs point to 'I'm f**ked.' Blu-ray drives are at least over $100 and repair is $150 to $180. There's a local guy that fixes PS3's but he just raised his price from $60 to $110. It sucks because this one still plays all PS2 games, DVD's, and CD's. Now I'm going to have to pay $300 for something that is inferior to this model... less USB ports, no flash card readers, no PS2 playback, and an uglier finish. The only comparitively positive attribute I can come up with is it won't be broken. FML

Repairing it is pretty much out of the question. It cost too much and will most likely just cost you more money in the future. I understand your situation, so I realize how bad it really does suck. Honestly, another ps3 is the best route though. I have been through dozens of blu-ray stand alone players for less than $300 and there is usually problem after problem with all of them (even if they are small or pertain to unpopular features). Your problem with the ps3 isn't all the frequent, so I would feel pretty secure buying a new one, although the new ones aren't as nice as what you have right now. Oh, and dust is pretty much a killer. I had some dust get into a stand alone and i tried everything to clean it. Nothing would rid of the artifacts on blu-ray discs. I took it apart, but it ended up even worse after my own attempt.

Thanks for the advice! My room is very dusty for some reason. I even have one of those Sharper Image Air Filters running all the time . I wouldn't be surprised if that was the cause. Anyway, maybe I will sell the 60GB on eBay... it still functions 100% with the exception of reading blu-ray discs. Some of my games even work for a few minutes then start freezing, but at this point playing risks freezing during a load/save which corrupts data. Maybe I'll make a good 25-30% off my new PS3... and I wouldn't get a stand alone player because I'm also a gamer. Since this happened all of a sudden (although 60GB are all just ticking time-bombs), now I need to cut back on my spending for a few months.

Ebay is full of people willing to buy and repair electronics. Good luck and try cleaning the dust out anyway because who knows it could actually work.
