Default Which player to buy?

Well I'm thinking about getting a new Blu-Ray player this week. I've done all the research and I can't decide which one to get. My choices are the BDP-S300 and the DMP-BD10. Before you say it...PS3 is not an option seeing that my brother is getting me that for my birthday in October and that will be going in the bedroom. Help me out my fellow Blu-Ray Brothers (and Sisters) in Arms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fans are too noisy on the PS3. Get a standalone, and use the PS3 for the bedroom. Besides, the PS3 remove doesn't have an off button, and you have to go through a stupid list of 3 command keystrokes with the TV on to turn the thing off. Sure, you can guess at it in the dark with your TV off, but it's very easy to push at the wrong speed/wrong time/wrong place, and end up having to turn your TV on with your remote, just so you can shut your PS3 off. Who builds a $500 machine without an off button on the remote (which you have to pay another $25 for, anyway)?

Dude...I don't play enough videogames for two PS3's. And even when I get one in October it will not be used for playing Blu-Ray's, games only. I still have my BDP-S1 and that will be heading for the bedroom as well. I guess I'm just weird that way, I didn't play DVD's on my other consoles so I won't be playing Blu-Rays on a PS3.

You say PS3 too noisy, then you say to put it in the bedroom...thats funny.

I NEVER notice my PS3 running...ever. (maybe because I dont sit three feet away from it!)

...as for the on/off, you have a valid point...but if pushing a button a few times while the TV has to be on is a problem for you, I suggest not operating heavy machinery or driving at night...

Just think winter is around the corner and it is always beneficial to have an extra heater in the bedroom...

ditto....it's the best player out right now!

Sony needs to start marketing the PS3 as a media center instead of a gaming machine. I think this would increase their demographics. Alot of people are still stuck in the thought process of "this is a game machine, i want a standalone", a shame, because the PS3 is SO much more!

With the exception of the stupid missing off button on the remote, and the fan noise, which I really could care less about because my home theater drowns it out, I love my PS3.

I have to agree -- Sony should go full-bore into promoting it as a media device. I would still love to see movie downloads (because it's sometimes difficult to get some releases here in Korea).

By the way... does the PS3 play DIVX? Can't seem to get it to work on mine.

You've already got a BDP-S1, and getting a PS3 soon. Why not wait for Profile 1.1 players? Or at least until the Samsung BD-P1400 comes out so you can enjoy DTS-HD-MA goodness.

I couldn't determine the BD-P1400 decodes DTS-HD MA. Are you assuming connection over HDMI 1.3 to a decoder? If it does decode DTS-HD MA is there a link to that disclosure?

the ps3 is the perfect media center in my mind. we just bought a second one after getting a bdp-1200 that we are now trying to sell. the ps3 has wireless connectivity for updates, ability to store videos, pictures, and songs, and includes all the necessary hardware that bluray players will need over the next few years.

www.walmart.com has the ps3 bundled with the remote for $499

but if a stand alone is what you want i chose the samsung bdp-1200 because it has (from what i've heard) fast loading speeds and is only a little more expensive then the others.

PS3.

If you have to have a standalone go for the Sony BDP-S301 at Costco. It's $449 and comes with an HDMI cable in the box. Costco also gives you three months to return it for any reason.

I personally would like a standalone in the bedroom also eventually, but I'm going to wait for the prices to come down to say $200....a year, two?........because it will be much easier to get the WAF and I won't be hooking it up to a surround system.

I recently got the Panny DMP-BD10A and so far it seems to be a great player.

My ps3 is whisper quiet. Dont listen to the guys who have issues with their remote function, theres a whole thread on this site why that subject is stupid.

I agree wait till profile 1.1 players are available, then compare.

I'm with dakota81 and monky. It's too close to the launch of Profile 1.1 players to buy something that won't last you 2-3 years.

Make a deal with your brother. You'll top up the cost of the PS3 that he's gonna get you for a standalone BD player later in Q4. Just get a PS3 now (either the 60GB or the 80GB) and enjoy.

You might be right...I think I will put this one on the back burner for a while and get me a nice profile 1.1 player.

Sucker?

I don't own a PS3 because I am very fond of seperates for audio and video and I game on a PC (OMG! Don't ban me from the forums). I have a DVR for DVR'ing and a Tuner for Tuning, several Amp for Amping, SACD for SACD'ing etc, etc, etc. I haven't seen anything from Sony that says what people are going to have to purchase to make the PS3 a tuner. 60 GB for DVR'ing HD? No eSATA on the PS3 and I am not fond of a ton of stuff hanging off the front USB ports. That's why they make a back. Take it easy on the guy - he's planning for what works for him. The PS3 is an amazing device but it isn't the end-all of media sources.
