Default PS3 Harddrive upgrade question.

I'm sure this may of been beat to death. But I can't find the answer. I'm going to upgrade my 80gb Fat(Motor Strom Bundle). I'm on the fence to buy a 250gb 7200 rpm or 320gb 7200 rpm. Price is about the same. But what I want to know is, Does the PS3 see all of the space. I don't want to buy the 320gb and it only see 250gb. Thanks for any and all help.

Your PS3 will see all the available space, though it will seem less since HDD makers define storage space (GB, etc.) differently than operating systems. Drives of at least 500GB, perhaps more, have been successfully used with PS3s. Just make sure it's a 9.5mm-high SATA drive; most notebook drives of this size are.

500bg on mine show as 468gb. I think you need to use a drive thats 5400rpm I was told 7200rpm could over heat the system.

You are right. Even though it can accept the 7200rpm drive, it does have a high risk of overheating. I believe Cnet or another site did a comparison of a 5400rpm and 7200rpm, and the difference wasnt enough to warrant the risk in my opinion.

HD Makers= 1GB=1000 Megabytes
OS systems= 1GB=1024 Megabytes (technically more correct)
Plus you lose several GBs to the TOC system for the drive. The good news is everyone cheats the same, so one 320GB drive is equal to the other.

Yup go with a 5400rpm if you can. You might get some over heating issues. Been running a 500GB 5400rpm Western Digital in there for last few months with not 1 problem.

I've read the comparison's between the 5400 & 7200 drives. But supposedly the newer 7200's are running the same temp as the 5400's.And going up is size for read and write time's, & what I've read from laptop users. The 7200 made a big difference. And I usually don't run my PS3 for more than a couple of hrs @ a time. But I'll take the advise and save a few $'s & get a 5400 RPM drive. Thanks.

Good information as my original 60GB is almost filled even after I delete all the old games I don't play anymore. I have very little room left to play with. Time for an upgrade for my fat PS3 as well.

I put 500GB drive in my 60GB since I figured that was a nice size and it was under $100 shipped and so on.

I don't think I use 20% of it though.

I used to download all the free stuff from PSN but I can't make time to play all those demos.

At least I know I'll have enough room on there forever most likely.

Wasn't there a hard drive upgrade thread around here? I'm like SinnerSe7en, have the old 60 GB and it's almost full (Damn Rock Band 1, 2, RB downloads & Lego RB ).

My biggest question is, how do you migrate? Is there some way to mirror my current 60GB HD to the new HD?

What brand is everybody using and how much are you paying?

1. You need to hook an external USB hard drive (must be formatted as FAT32) to your PS3 and run the Backup Utility in your System Settings menu.
2. Turn off and unplug your PS3 and install your new drive.
3. After powerup, attach the USB hard drive where your backup is located, start the Backup Utility and select the Restore option.

I upgraded my 60GB to a 250GB 5400rpm Seagate about a year ago and never had any issues.

I was having this issue as well with my Fat 60gb. It seems that some sports games load nearly the whole disc onto the hard drive.

I upgraded to 640GB this weekend and found it to be quite simply. Toughest part is finding the right size screwdriver to remove the four screws that secure the harddrive into the removable tray.

Keep in mind that backing up your ps3 requires significant space, mine was almost 30gb. I ended up just saving the game saves onto a memory stickpro.

FYI (for those not in the know), the biggest hard drive for the ps3 available is now 640GB:

Western Digital - Scorpio Blue 640GB Internal Serial ATA Hard Drive for Laptops - Silver/Black $109.99

640GB laptop hard drives available on newegg.com.

Even though they are both $99.99, the Samsung ships for .99 while the WD ships for free While most will say that the WD drives are better (and I do agree), the Samsung is not bad either (I had a 500GB Sasung HD for my old ps3 before it yellow lighted and the HD performed great with no issues).

Anybody looking to format their hard drives for backup, fat32formatter works the best for HDDs 500gb and over.

So awesome! Thanks! I have an external USB drive that is FAT32, but it has stuff on it. Does it have to be completely free of any other files?

Thanks again!
